All Saints Readers’ Cup Competition 2018 for students in Years 7 and 8 will be held on Tuesday 20 March at lunchtime in the Middle School Lecture Theatre.

Participating students and staff have been issued the set texts: Blackout by Michael Pryor, Arney Avery by Sue Walker and Captain Mack by James Roy. They will also read the Brothers Grimm fairy tale, The Frog-King. Students should aim to read at least one of the materials and become a ‘specialist’ in it, able to confidently recall details from the text. The staff and I look forward to promoting our love of reading and spirit of competition in a fun-filled environment.

Teams have now been finalised. All Saints Middle School will enter the following divisions: Intermediate A (one Year 9 team), Intermediate B (one Year 9 team),  Junior A (four Year 8 teams) and Junior B (three Year 7 teams).

Speakers are not yet finalised; we are still researching evidence for both sides of the topic.

The topics for Round 1 are:

  • Years 7 and 8 (Juniors): ‘That cats make better pets than dogs’
  • Years 9 and 10 (Intermediates): ‘That hosting the Commonwealth games is worthwhile’.

Debating venues are as follows:

  • Junior A: Somerset College
  • Junior B: ASAS
  • Intermediate A: AB Paterson College
  • Intermediate B: Marymount College

Round 1 for all divisions will be on Wednesday 28 March at 6:00pm.
