Senior School Laboratory Technician

We are currently inviting applications from a dynamic and passionate Laboratory Technician to join our Senior School. This is a full-time, term time plus position commencing from Term 1 2027.

About the role
  • Coordinate laboratory operations and practical activities, including planning experiment schedules, preparing chemicals, specimens and equipment, and designing, testing and supporting practical experiments in line with curriculum requirements.
  • Provide practical and technical support to teaching staff and students, including demonstrations, student investigations, fieldwork activities and the use of scientific technologies such as data loggers and digital sensors.
  • Ensure a safe and compliant laboratory environment, maintaining WHS procedures, risk assessments, SOPs, chemical and poisons registers, Safety Data Sheets and appropriate storage, handling and disposal practices.
  • Maintain a proactive member within the school WHS committee.
  • Maintain laboratories, preparation areas, equipment and safety systems to a high standard, including monitoring equipment performance and coordinating maintenance, servicing and repairs.
  • Manage laboratory resources and purchasing, including stock control, ordering and receiving supplies, annual stocktakes, equipment loans and replacements, and monitoring expenditure against the Science budget.
  • Supervise and support Laboratory Technician staff, including allocating work, providing practical training and maintaining induction processes for new teaching and technical staff.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development of Science operations, working collaboratively with the Head of Science and school leadership on laboratory procedures, projects, future requirements and continuous improvement.
About You
  • Relevant tertiary qualification at a minimum level of Associate Diploma/Diploma level or relevant knowledge and experience.
  • Previous experience in a school environment highly regarded.
  • A working knowledge of chemicals to enable them to recognise incompatibilities, chemical symbols, safe handling and correct storage of chemicals.
  • Knowledge and experience in understanding the associated work practices relevant to a laboratory.
  • High level of attention to detail and accuracy essential.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage time effectively and prioritise tasks to ensure duties are completed in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure, and within a team environment
  • Ability to communicate positively and effectively with staff and students and maintain confidentiality where required.
