Standing Tall: A Term of Pride and Possibility

STANDING TALL
Welcome back to Term 4! I hope the holidays provided a chance for families to rest, reconnect, and enjoy time together. It has been wonderful to see students return with fresh energy and a renewed sense of purpose. The start of Term 4 always carries a special kind of buzz – one filled with excitement, reflection, and a little disbelief at how quickly the year has flown.

On my morning walks before classes begin, I’ve loved hearing from our young people about their holiday adventures and what they’re most looking forward to this term. There’s a real sense of energy and excitement around the school, and as always, plenty of smiles and questions from our hugely engaging students.

Of course, learning and opportunity never stop at All Saints. During the holidays, three Duke of Edinburgh expeditions ventured out, while other students explored New Caledonia and Japan through cultural exchanges and represented the school in netball in Fiji. These experiences remind us that All Saints is a place where learning happens everywhere – through adventure, service, connection, and the courage to step into new environments. My thanks to the dedicated staff who guided these adventures. Your energy makes these experiences possible. I never take for granted the commitment and care you bring to making these moments happen.

If Term 3 was about growth and momentum, then Term 4 is about standing tall – taking pride in the strengths, friendships, and passions that have taken root throughout the year. For our students, this term is a time to look back on how far they’ve come and step confidently into what comes next.

OUR YEAR 12s: COURAGE AND COMPLETION

Our Year 12 students are entering their final weeks of formal classes before turning their attention to study and external exams. This is an emotional milestone, not only for them but for their families and teachers who have walked beside them. For our teachers, this is a bittersweet time. They have poured so much time, energy, and emotion into their students and will work right until the end to ensure they have every chance of success. For parents, too, especially those who have been part of our community for many years, this is a moment filled with pride and reflection. We hold all of our Year 12 families in our thoughts and prayers as they complete this final chapter and begin their transition into further study, training, or the world of work.

SEASONS OF TRANSITION

As the term unfolds, there will be a special focus on transition for many. Our youngest students begin to prepare for their move from Prep to Year 1, our Year 6s step towards Middle School, and our Year 9s look ahead to Senior School. Each step is a moment of growth, courage, and belonging. Our staff are deeply committed to making these transitions smooth and supportive, ensuring every child feels confident and known. Families can help by talking with their children about the excitement and possibilities that come with change.

REFLECTIONS FROM AHISA: WALKING BACKWARDS INTO THE FUTURE

During the holidays, I had the privilege of attending the AHISA (Association of Heads of Independent Schools of Australia) Conference. Its theme, Ka Mua Ka Muri – a Māori proverb meaning “walking backwards into the future” – reminds us that the past, present, and future are inseparably connected. We walk into the future with the wisdom and traditions of those who came before us, our eyes on what we value most.

That sentiment has resonated deeply with me as I enter the last few weeks of my first year as Principal at our special school. This first year has been about understanding the history, people, and heart of All Saints – and carrying that forward with intention. As we continue developing our Blueprint 2026+, your voices have affirmed a clear message: our values and culture remain our compass, even as we look to innovate and evolve. The current visioning and missioning exercise has reminded me how important it is to anchor our future in the relationships and traditions that have always defined this school. That message speaks not only to leadership, but to all of us as a community – how we honour what has shaped us while imagining what’s next.

THE ANCHOR AND THE HORIZON

At All Saints, our values of Truth, Faith, and Compassion remain the anchors that hold us steady as we set our sights on the horizon. The weeks ahead will bring many opportunities to celebrate – from Speech Day and Valedictory events to Foundation Day. These moments remind us of who we are as a community and the spirit that defines us. I look forward to celebrating these occasions with you all.

As we move through this final term, may we all stand tall – proud of our growth, grateful for our blessings, and excited for what lies ahead.

Thank you for your continued support, encouragement, and partnership. It remains a great privilege to lead our remarkable school.

Don’t Forget Your 15 Bottles or Cans on Tuesday!

We’re kicking off Term 4 with a bold and meaningful mission, and we need your help to make it happen!

This coming Tuesday 14 October, our school will attempt to set a Guinness World Record by creating a giant turtle sculpture on our oval using 15,000 plastic bottles.

This project is not only a celebration of sustainability, but also a powerful way to show what our community can achieve when we work together.

WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU
Each student and staff member must bring at least 15 plastic bottles or cans (no glass or alcohol containers, please).

Families are encouraged to donate more than 15 bottles if possible — every extra bottle helps us reach our goal!

Bottles and cans should be brought in on the morning of Tuesday 14 October. Students can take them to their regular classroom / tutor group.  Allocated times have been arranged for class groups to visit the oval to add their donations to Timmy the Turtle.

RALLY HELP

Please ask friends, neighbours, grandparents, and extended family to contribute bottles.

If you're chatting with other parents over the weekend, please spread the word and encourage bottle and can donations.

WE'RE GOING TO BE ON THE NEWS!

Channel 10 News will be covering this special event – let’s show them what All Saints can do!

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our students to be part of something truly special. With your support, we can make Timmy the Turtle a record-breaking symbol of environmental action and ASAS spirit!

Chairman's Dinner 2025

The annual Chairman’s Dinner is a special event on the All Saints calendar — an evening that brings together Year 12 families who began their journey with us in Pre Prep and Prep.

Hosted by School Chairman Mr John Fradgley OAM and his wife Tina, the dinner united parents, students, and staff for a night of shared memories, friendships, and milestones celebrated along the way.

There was a wonderful sense of warmth and gratitude in the room as families reflected on years gone by and looked ahead to the exciting chapters still to come.

A heartfelt thank you to students Rylee Buchanan and Jesse Wenzel for their thoughtful speeches on behalf of the group, and to Bank Hill for helping create a touching trip down memory lane with a photo montage.

Finally, thank you to the Chairman’s Class of 2025 and their families for enriching our community over the past 14 years — what an incredible journey it has been.

GLOW: Girls Leading Our World

Late last term, a group of young ladies from the Junior, Middle, and Senior Schools attended an inspiring morning event hosted by the Academy for Enterprising Girls, a government-funded initiative that empowers young women through entrepreneurship, STEM, and leadership. It was a fantastic opportunity for future female innovators to come together from across the All Saints campus.

Special guests included Sophia Rizzo, founder of global beauty brand Glitter Girl, who launched her business at just 10 years old and is now a 17-year-old entrepreneur and GLOW ambassador, and Millie Valentine, the 13-year-old creator of the Move Over Mama podcast.

Students heard Sophia’s keynote story and took part in an exclusive Q&A, before joining a lively panel discussion with both Sophia and Millie. Topics ranged from entrepreneurship and resilience to social media and balancing school with passion projects.

Both guest speakers left the audience with empowering advice:

“You don’t need to have it all figured out – just start, even if it feels scary.”
– Sophia

“Be curious and brave and don’t wait until you feel ready – confidence grows every time you try.”
– Millie

The event was an inspiring reminder that age is no barrier to innovation, creativity, and leadership. A special thanks to all staff involved who were instrumental in making the event a success.

Term 4: Everybody Hang On!

Short week but plenty happening in the Junior School as we start the rollercoaster that will be Term 4. It was, as always, a blessing to welcome students back to school on Tuesday and I hope that all families have had an opportunity to rest and refresh during the holiday period.

Last week in Term 3:

  • Ireland and Ruby, our School Captains and some of their senior friends hosted a morning tea chat with Year 5 girls in the shade of the Grove. Some beautiful conversation about friendships and school challenges was shared.
  • Our Giveathon Assembly was a spectacular finale to a very successful term.
  • Mr Meaney hosted two representative teams at the 2025 Schools AFL Q Cup with both teams progressing through to the finals.

This week:

  • Year 1 visited the Currumbin waterways exploring the foreshore as part of their Making Memories inquiry. Along the way they met Mr Forget-Me-Not whose sister, Mrs Forget-Me-Not, was having trouble remembering some of the special places she used to visit and things she used to see at Currumbin when she was a young girl. He challenged our little adventurers to find examples of man-made, natural and managed structures as they walked the boardwalk. Their day concluded with some play and exploration of the beach inlet. Check out the photos here.
  • Years 4 to 6 played their first round of the APS interschool sports comp for this season. It was a great afternoon and so fulfilling to see our ovals speckled with so many students enjoying sport.
  • Year 3 slept over at school as part of their camp experience. Lots of fun (and not much sleep!) for these youngsters. Thanks so much to the teaching team who ensure these exciting experiences are so valuable and successful.
  • Swimming lessons started for Term 4 with Preppies in the pool for their first time.
  • Year 6 received a visit from the Honourable John-Paul Langbroek MP, Minister for Education and The Arts.

And next week:

  • Year 5 will participate in their Future Leaders workshop and forum day with staff and leaders from across the school and within our community.
  • Year 6 boys will participate in their ‘Boys Night in’ with Tommy Herschel
  • Year 5 girls will spend a morning with Emma from Pippin Girl as part of our Personal Development program.

Lots to look forward to in this very exciting but short term.

Busy Times & Bright Celebrations: Navigating Term 4 Together

This month is an incredibly busy time for all families as all manner of end-of-year celebrations chew up evenings and weekends … and yet the assessment program rolls on and students need to stay in touch with their schooling commitments. Please take the time to sit down with your child and walk through their calendar for the next few weeks so that they can forward plan and minimise the stress levels. Core teachers are obviously more than happy to assist in this regard, too, particularly regarding timelines for upcoming assessment.

      MIDDLE SCHOOL CELEBRATION EVENINGS
In the Middle School, each year level gets to celebrate their very own prize-giving night whereby we recognise outstanding student contributions in the areas of academic performance, endeavour and citizenship. Please mark the following date claimers in your diaries:

      • Year 7 Celebration Evening: Thursday 30 October (Week 4): 7.00pm in Nairn Theatre
      • Year 8 Celebration Evening: Thursday 6 November (Week 5): 7.00pm in Nairn Theatre
      • Middle School Art Show: Thursday 13 November (Week 6): 4.45pm in MS Art Room
      • Year 9 Graduation, Prizegiving & Art Show: Thursday 13 November (Week 6): 7.00pm in Nairn Theatre

It is an expectation that every Middle School student attends their relevant celebration evening. Tickets will be limited to two (2) per student. Your Middle School child does not need their own ticket for their relevant Celebration Evening.

With regards the Year 9 Graduation, there are two important points worth noting: firstly, we’d ask that everyone in attendance be appropriately dressed for a formal evening; secondly, every Year 9 will cross the stage to receive their graduation ticket and badge.

Ticketing for all three events, as ever, will be tight, so please look out for an email next week with ticketing details.

      Classroom Abroad: Reflections from Japan

From the neon glow of Tokyo to the quiet reflection of Hiroshima, the Japan Study Tour invited our Year 9 and 10 students to step beyond their comfort zones and experience learning in a new light. Over twelve unforgettable days, they explored a country rich in history, culture and resilience, discovering how lessons from the classroom come vividly to life in the world beyond. What they found in Japan was not just beauty, but meaning - and lessons that will stay with them long after their return to All Saints.

      The Power of Perspective

Tokyo dazzled from the moment we arrived. Students navigated the organised chaos of Shibuya Crossing, watched their faces flash across the big screen at a baseball game and learned the delicate art of crafting replica food samples. Between the rush of the city and quiet moments beneath the red lanterns of Sensoji Temple, they began to see how Japan’s contrasts tell its story - a place where centuries-old rituals and cutting-edge innovation live side by side.

And then came Kyoto, a city that felt like stepping into living history. Each turn revealed something different - the hush of bamboo forests, the shimmer of gold at Kinkaku-ji, and the sound of laughter as students explored narrow cobbled lanes. Here, they didn’t just observe Japan’s heritage, they felt it. Kyoto’s charm lies in its stillness and simplicity, and on our evening walks back to the hotel, students began to notice the small details that make it so captivating: the glow of paper lanterns, the rhythm of footsteps on stone, and the seamless blend of past and present.

      Lessons in Resilience and Hope

In Hiroshima, the pace slowed and the learning deepened. History came alive as we met Keiko Oguro, an 88-year-old atomic bomb survivor who shared her story with extraordinary grace and courage. Her message of peace and human connection will remain one of the most powerful lessons of the trip.

At the end of her talk, Keanu Paunde-Schaffer presented Keiko with a handmade clock engraved with the exact time the bomb fell on Hiroshima. She was visibly moved - a gesture that bridged generations and cultures in a moment of shared humanity. Later that day, at the Peace Park, students placed our one thousand cranes at the Children’s Peace Monument, adding their hopes for peace to those of millions before them.

      Finding Joy in the Journey

There was balance in every day - moments of reflection, and moments of pure joy. From the friendly deer of Miyajima competing for snacks and attention, to the laughter that filled late-night kombini snack runs, the students found delight in the small, simple things that make travel unforgettable. Each day stretched long, often 13 hours or more, but their curiosity never wavered. They approached every new experience with openness, respect and a sense of adventure that made this journey truly their own.

      Coming Home Changed

As we packed our bags for the final time - suitcases a little fuller and hearts definitely so - it was clear that this journey had done exactly what it set out to do. It built empathy, confidence and connection.

To our students, thank you for your courage, humour and kindness throughout this experience. You represented All Saints with pride and grace. To our families, thank you for your trust and support. Your children have carried the All Saints spirit across Japan and brought it home, forever changed.

Netball, Service, and Island Adventures: Our Unforgettable Trip to Fiji

During the Term 3 holidays, a group of 19 netball girls from Years 8 and 9, accompanied by three staff members, set off on a 10-day adventure to
the beautiful islands of Fiji. The trip was an incredible mix of sport,
culture, and community - and one that will be remembered for years to come.

The journey began with a visit to South Sea Island, where the girls enjoyed a day of island fun including snorkelling, kayaking, paddle boarding, and swimming in the warm Fijian sunshine. It was the perfect way to relax, bond, and soak up the tropical beauty before the games began.

We then visited an orphanage in Nadi, spending time with the children and helping with cleaning and maintenance. From there, we travelled south to Sigatoka, where our netballers trained with local teams before competing in the Salad Bowl Netball Carnival. Both All Saints Blue and All Saints Gold teams played with great skill and
determination, with Team Blue finishing runners-up in a thrilling 20–18 grand
final against a strong team from Nadi. Their teamwork, endurance, and
sportsmanship were outstanding. While in Sigatoka, we also visited a local
kindergarten, spending time in classrooms and donating stationery and books
from our school. We then visited a pottery village, learning traditional
techniques, trying Kava, and joining in song and dance - a true cultural highlight
that left everyone feeling grateful and inspired.

The final leg of our tour took us to the remote village of Lomanikaya on Vatulele Island, for further service-learning and a chance to experience authentic Fijian life. From our exciting (and bumpy) boat ride over to the island, heartwarming welcome ceremonies, traditional Fijian meals - the girls made us proud with their openness to pitch in and help, get to know the local children, assist with chores and learn more about their way of life. A highlight was our visit to Vatulele District School, where the entire school
welcomed us with traditional dances and song, followed by an exciting and
friendly netball match against their Year 8 students. The villagers farewelled
us on our final night with a beach bonfire, more singing and dancing, forever
leaving an imprint on each and every one of us. Both staff and students
returned home with full hearts, a sense of gratitude for the opportunity of
such a unique experience, and lifelong memories.

Year 7 and Year 8 Leaders

At our Middle School Assembly on Friday 10 October, we badged the Term 4 Leaders for Year 7 and Year 8. The two representatives for each class were selected by their peers after having completed a reflection, and we very much look forward to them being role models of servant leadership this term.

The certificate they received along with their badges of office contained the following Statement of Intent: “As Middle School Leaders, we will strive to inspire even greater levels of connection and involvement within our classes, our Houses and within and across all three year levels. We will also endeavour to model the sort of selfless, empathetic servant leader described in Galatians 6:2: “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ.”

This statement was generated by our first batch of Year 9 Middle School Leaders, constituting their vision for Middle School throughout 2025.

      Welcome Back!

I trust everyone managed to rest up and recharge for our final term of 2025, and I welcome you all back, especially our Duke of Edinburgh expedition teams that travelled during the holidays.

This is a very busy term, especially for Year 12, so please make sure you are checking the FIDO calendar and Parent Communication pages regularly for the important dates and events.

Year 12 have only two more weeks until their external examinations begin.

Year 10 have made the exciting transition to their Unit 1 studies and Year 11 now commence the summative work of Unit 3.

Personally, I had a wonderful and refreshing term of long service leave. I can’t thank enough the amazing staff in the Senior School who stepped into roles in my absence. They were outstanding. It was also so heartwarming to have so many well-wishers seek me out upon my return. It truly is a beautiful community of people. I wish all families the best of health for this upcoming term and hope that all students give their best and don’t waste a moment.

      Humanities Awards 2025

In an era defined by rapid technological advancement, and significant global challenges, humanities education is more vital than ever. It develops critical thinking skills, fosters empathy, and ensure students gain ethical reasoning, all skills essential for navigating complex social, cultural, and environmental issues. Through the study of Ancient and Modern History, Geography and Philosophy & Reason, students gain insight into diverse perspectives and the lived human experience. Humanities education empowers young people to become thoughtful citizens, capable of questioning, reflecting, and leading with purpose. In a world that needs connection as much as innovation, the Humanities remind us of what it means to be human.

This year, Humanities students were encouraged to participate in a range of external academic competitions. Although only a small group, their outstanding achievements have been formally recognised. Two of the major competitions entered were the Australian Geography Competition and the Australian History Competition. The award recipients for these competitions are listed below. I extend my sincere congratulations to every student who took part and gave their best effort. Your commitment to academic excellence is commendable.

All Saints Students Selected for National Youth Science Forum

Two outstanding students All Saints Science students have been selected to represent Queensland at the prestigious National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) in January next year.

      Mariana Ng
and Yuki Yu were chosen for their exceptional passion and achievements in science, and were invited to meet Her Excellency the Honourable Dr Jeannette Young AC PSM, Governor of Queensland, in a special reception celebrating the state’s NYSF delegates.

Photos from the event, shared on the Governor’s official X account, show Mariana proudly representing All Saints in a long white dress alongside other selected students. Unfortunately, Yuki was caught in Brisbane’s peak-hour traffic and missed the photo opportunity — but her achievement is no less remarkable.

We extend our warmest congratulations to both Mariana and Yuki for earning their place at the NYSF. Their dedication to science and innovation is inspiring, and we look forward to seeing the impact they’ll make as future leaders in STEM.

      Primary School Cup Netball Competition

On the first weekend of the school holidays, a select group of Year 5 and Year 6 students represented our school at the Primary School Cup Netball Competition in Underwood. Competing in the Championship division against 34 schools from across Queensland, our team faced a challenging pool and played six competitive games on Saturday and a further 6 games on Sunday.

They showed incredible skill, teamwork, and determination, losing only one match on the Saturday to Marymount College, who went on to win the entire competition. Although this result meant we didn’t progress to the finals on Sunday, our students demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship and resilience throughout the tournament.

Their positive attitude, support for one another, and commitment to fair play were a true credit to our school. A special thank you to the parents for their dedication in getting students to the early 7am trainings and for their support over the weekend of the competition.

Congratulations to all players for representing our school with pride!

      Queensland All Schools Athletics Championships

All Saints Anglican School proudly competed at the Queensland All Schools Athletics Championships held in Brisbane, finishing an impressive 22nd overall in the state… a fantastic achievement among hundreds of schools!

The competition took place under hot and humid conditions, reminiscent of those faced by elite athletes at the recent World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. Despite the heat, our students showed incredible resilience and determination.

Many of our athletes had to commute up and down the M1 across multiple days, balancing travel with competition during the final weekend of the school holidays. Their commitment and focus were truly commendable.

Ayden Fell Shines in QSO Composer Program

Year 12 Music and Music Extension (Composition) student, Ayden Fell, was a successful participant in the Queensland Symphony Orchestra Compose-Connect Program, and his own composition was recently premiered by the QSO Chamber Orchestra in the ABC studio in South Bank, Brisbane. Ayden’s was one of only 21 high school student premiered compositions.

Under the guidance of QSO musician Craig Allister Young and composer Timothy Tate, this initiative has provided a platform for composers of the future to nurture their skills in crafting compositions for orchestral instruments. Importantly, Ayden Fell, an emerging talent, was granted the opportunity to experience the fruition of his efforts through live performance.

This year’s edition was made even more special as each composer was tasked with composing a musical work in response to art by the brilliant Arabella Walker.

Ayden is to be congratulated on his remarkable achievement.

Some remarks below from Ayden Fell and his experience:

“It was fantastic meeting new people, getting to work with like-minded composers, gaining advice and working alongside them. This helped in the creation of my piece, especially being able to ‘bounce’ my ideas off to new and different people, who are experts and leaders of their field. They were always encouraging, supportive, and taught me as if I were at their level as professional composers.

Being involved in this program has helped in my composition process, aided my experience and current University applications, and further, I was also able to submit my orchestral composition as my final Music Extension assessment task and include it as part of my Composition portfolio.

When my piece was performed live by the QSO Chamber orchestra in front of a live audience, it felt incredible - AMAZING!”

A WONDERFUL YEAR OF CONNECTION AND COMMUNITY
It’s been another great year of Parents & Friends (P&F) activities and friendship, with so many moments that have brought our All Saints community together.

The All Saints P&F Committee warmly invites all parents and guardians to attend the 2025 Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Monday 10 November 2025 at 7.00pm in the McIntosh Administration Building.

The AGM is open to all members of our school community and provides an opportunity to hear about the year’s achievements, learn more about upcoming initiatives, and connect with others who share a passion for supporting our students and school life.

At the AGM each year, a committee is elected to oversee the association’s activities, supported by various sub-committees that help organise community and fundraising events.

If you are interested in joining or continuing as a member of the P&F Committee, please complete the Nomination Form by Sunday 26 October 2025. Membership is capped at 50 members. If nominations exceed this number, a voting process will be conducted electronically prior to the AGM. All applicants will be contacted following the meeting to confirm the outcome of their nomination.

We look forward to seeing many familiar and new faces as we continue to build a strong, connected All Saints community together.

NEW MEMBERS AND TREASURER NEEDED FOR FOPA

FOPA operates the Goodwill Café (situated inside the Nairn Theatre) throughout the year, with all profits directed back to Performing Arts. It’s a fun, welcoming group and a great way to meet new friends while contributing to an area that brings so much joy to school life.

FOPA is also seeking a Treasurer for 2026. If you’re an organised person who is comfortable working with numbers, we’d love to hear from you. The role involves preparing basic reports for monthly meetings, monitoring bank accounts and EFTPOS receipts, and arranging expense reimbursements. A complete handover will be provided, along with ongoing support.

To learn more or get involved, please contact FOPA President Jill Moon at fopa@asas.qld.edu.au.
