Whole School

The Year is Well Underway!

It has been a fantastic start to the 2025 school year, and as we move through these first weeks, the energy across the school is palpable. I have to ice my cheeks every night from smiling so much—such is the joy of this place!

Last week, I wrote to staff summarising how I have been spending my time, and I wanted to share some of that with you.

I firmly believe that the overwhelming majority of my time for the first few months needs to be spent with students, staff and parents—both building relationships and gathering information. I cannot begin to think about and plan for the next chapter without having an in-depth understanding of All Saints, and even more importantly, 'feeling and seeing' All Saints in action.

I have spent much of my time immersed in the life of the school—walking through classrooms, sitting with students at lunch, playing handball and other games at breaktime, getting lost on campus and being helped by students, watching our athletes train, our performers rehearse, and meeting with staff across all areas of the school. These informal moments have been some of the most rewarding and have reaffirmed the exceptional culture that exists at All Saints.

One of my favourite questions to ask students is, 'How has your day been out of 10?', I can confidently say that our students’ cups are full, thanks to the care, support and exceptional teaching they receive every day. Their enthusiasm is contagious, and it is clear that All Saints is a place where students feel a deep sense of belonging.

Mother Ann reminded me at my Commissioning that now that I have said, 'I do' and made my pledge, there is no escaping—I really feel part of the school now!

What Makes All Saints So Special?

This is an adapted piece from my recent staff email.

I have been reflecting on the ingredients that make All Saints such an extraordinary school. Why is our culture so strong? Why are our students so confident, self-assured, and engaged? Here are just a few things I’ve experienced so far:

  • Chapels – Our Year 11 and 12 Chapel last week was a masterclass in creating a space where students feel seen, heard, and connected. Seeing our senior students singing, performing actions, showing vulnerability, and engaging in respectful reflection speaks volumes about our authenticity and our confidence in our identity as a school.
  • Swim Carnivals – The resilience and support shown by our students were incredible. Whether they were elite swimmers or those stepping up with courage despite not being confident in the water, everyone had their moment to shine.
  • Parent Information Evenings – A strong home-school partnership is crucial, and I was buoyed by the number of parents who attended—not just attended but engaged. The Junior School mingles afterward were a great illustration of this partnership, and the Year 7 evening was a particular highlight, starting with singing and dancing to Taylor Swift’s Shake It Off! Moments like these reinforce the warmth and vibrancy of our school community.
  • Parents and Friends Committee – Attending my first P&F meeting was incredibly uplifting. Having such a full room of energetic and passionate advocates and volunteers for our school was truly inspiring. A big thank you to Kat Pearson for her leadership.
  • High Standards – Whether it’s uniform expectations, behaviour or academic rigour, our staff consistently reinforce the values that shape our culture. A huge thank you to our parents for supporting us at home in upholding these standards—it makes all the difference. As a parent myself, I am also thoroughly enjoying the rigor (and enjoyment!) of homework time! The attention to detail in these areas is a key part of what makes All Saints stand apart.
  • A Passion for Teaching – The joy and enthusiasm with which our staff approach their roles is evident. This is a school where people love coming to work, and that passion directly impacts our students.

There is not one thing that makes up our culture and identity—it is many small but significant experiences, events, and moments that define us.

Building Connections in the Gold Coast Education Landscape

As part of my early days in the role, I have been visiting other principals and schools on the Gold Coast. These connections ensure that our school has a strong voice in the broader Gold Coast education landscape and provide valuable opportunities for collaboration and shared learning.

This week, I will also be attending a retreat with the Principals of other Queensland Anglican Schools—an opportunity to understand the educational landscape, collaborate, explore opportunities, and further build the reputation of All Saints. I will report back in my next newsletter.

Looking Ahead

As we continue through the term, I look forward to meeting more of our families. Please do not hesitate to stop me when you see me around campus—I would love to hear your story (and I apologise in advance if I ask your name again!).

I am also excited to invite parents to our Principal Coffee Mornings, where I will share some thoughts on education and the journey ahead. These gatherings provide a wonderful opportunity to connect over coffee and conversation.

Behind the Scenes on Photo Day

Ever wondered what really goes on behind the scenes during photo week? It’s more than just a quick snapshot! This year, Advanced Life Photography captured over 1,800 students, 200 sibling shots, and 300 staff in just three tightly scheduled days.

Wednesday morning saw a record-breaking 80 sibling groups come through, while Middle School students powered through their photo day on Thursday—rain and all! It’s an enormous effort to coordinate, but thanks to meticulous planning and teamwork, the week ran smoothly.

Stage 1: Planning

The school’s photo day is locked in a year in advance, with representatives from each sub-school ensuring everything runs like clockwork. Mr Andrew Cowan (Junior School), Mrs Michelle Hunter (Middle School), and Mrs Katie Ashcroft (Senior School) coordinate schedules around PE lessons, specialist classes, swimming carnivals, and even the best time to capture Pre Prep before they hit the sandpit or paint station!

Stage 2: On the Day

The Advanced Life team are pros at getting students lined up in height order, adjusting uniforms, and ensuring every smile is picture-perfect. From fixing untucked shirts and loose ties to making sure every student blinks at the right time, their attention to detail is impressive!

A huge thank you to parents for ensuring students arrived looking their best and for your patience during the busy sibling sessions. Staff members also appreciated being able to jump the queue to get back to class on time.

If you haven’t ordered your photos yet, there’s still time! Place your order online by Sunday 23 February to avoid a late fee. Visit www.advancedlife.com.au and use the code PLP QNG QFV to order.

Check out some of our behind-the-scenes moments below!

Important: Friday Finishing Time

Please note that the finishing time for Middle and Senior School on a Friday afternoon is something of a ‘moveable feast.’

Typically, the school day ends at 3.00pm on a Friday (e.g. Swim Trials, Home APS games); however, once the APS season commences, traffic conditions will often mean that students travelling away will return sometime between 3.10pm and 3.30pm.

With that in mind, we ask that parents please do not arrive before 3.00pm. Arriving too early causes significant congestion on Highfield Drive, making it difficult for school buses—transporting the very students parents are waiting to collect—to return on time.

With regard to the supervision of Middle and Senior School students, the routine remains the same as any other day: if a student is not being picked up immediately after school, they can head to the library (which remains open until 5.00pm on Fridays).

If you have any questions, please contact your child's sub-school administration office.

Service Learning Expedition

Late last year, 20 students and four teachers embarked on the 2024 All Saints Service Learning Expedition (SLE) to northern Thailand. The main aim of the SLE was to work with The Rescue Mission for Children (RMFC), an Australian charity that works with many children from the Akha hill tribe regions. These children mostly come from Myanmar across the border and are often not recognised as persons, therefore they are considered stateless. They live on a mission in northern Thailand surrounded by rainforest. They attend local schools, worship regularly, and their life is significantly enriched by the support of the RMFC.

All Saints spent 7 nights on the mission with the children, sharing meals together, learning from one another, and engaging in activities from playing games and crafting to early morning devotions where the children sing so beautifully. While the children were at school, All Saints students completed projects including building a cubby house, painting a mural, planting bananas after digging them out from the plantation, and helping Lenore, the charity president, with other small activities and tasks.

While at the mission, students also visited a local Akha village, experienced Thai food at local restaurants and markets, enjoyed a stunning waterfall walk at the Khun Korn waterfall, visited a local Akha church, and attended local school visits including a morning spent at the district sports carnival, which was an unforgettable experience. The tour finished off with a Christmas celebration with the children before departing for Chiang Mai.

Upon reflection and since returning home from Thailand, our students have gained so much from this expedition. In a few short words, they really loved the time on the mission with the children and believed they created some amazing bonds with them in their short time. They were impressed by the happiness, joy, and love the children had for each other and their independence. They also came to understand that many things they might take for granted or believe they need are not necessary, and you can live without life’s luxuries and be happy.

The last few days we embarked on a tourist voyage through Chiang Mai. This involved visiting an elephant sanctuary and swimming with the elephants, attending a cultural show at the Old Chiang Mai Cultural Centre, completing a Thai Farm cooking school which ultimately became a highlight for many, and generally immersing ourselves in the old city of Chiang Mai and the night markets. Many highlights were also had here, with the children particularly enjoying the time for their own independence at the night markets and being able to explore all Thailand has to offer during this time.

I would like to thank the teachers who embarked on the SLE with me: Ms Renee Cacciola-Whittle, Ms Julie Klein and Mr Brendan Callaghan. Without their support, this tour would not have been possible. Plus, the RMFC, particularly Lenore, their president, and Jenny, the Treasurer, and her husband Mark Stevens (former teacher at All Saints). Their support in the lead-up to and in Thailand during the expedition was invaluable and made for a very smooth 12 nights away from Australia.

If you would like to know, more contact myself Erin Merrin on emerrin@asas.qld.edu.au or if you would like to support the work of Rescue Mission for Children please see their website.

In the Media

Thank you to the Gold Coast Bulletin who today featured our Principal, Mr Matt Corbett, as he settles into his new role. In the article, Mr Corbett shares his vision for balancing tradition and innovation while embracing the strong sense of community that defines us.

Junior School

Year 6 Leaders and Representatives

As our Year 6 students embark on their final year in the Junior School, we look to them as role models and future leaders within our community. Their journey is filled with opportunities to showcase their dedication, responsibility and leadership capabilities. These roles are not just titles, but valuable experiences that help them grow and prepare for the challenges ahead.

One of the key roles our Year 6 students take on is as members of the Games Crew. During break times, they assist in organising and supervising games in the courtyard, ensuring that all students have a fun and safe environment to enjoy their recess. This role fosters a sense of responsibility and camaraderie among the students as they work together to create an inclusive atmosphere.

Additionally, our Year 6 leaders play a crucial part in supporting the youngest members of our school community. Each morning, they help our Prep students by walking them to their classrooms, offering a friendly hand and reassuring presence. This task not only helps the younger students feel secure and welcomed but also instils a sense of empathy and leadership in our Year 6 students.

We are incredibly grateful for the time and effort these students put into their roles. Their willingness to assist others and their commitment to the school community do not go unnoticed. Through their actions, they embody the values of our school and set a positive example for their peers.

From collecting recycling material to manning the sports shed, the contributions of our Year 6 leaders and representatives are invaluable, and we take pride in watching them grow and thrive in their roles. Their dedication is a testament to the strong sense of community and support that defines our school

      Middle School Swimming Carnival

Congratulations to all members of the Middle School for their spirited involvement in Wednesday’s Swimming Carnival.

The opening war cries kicked the whole event off in exactly the right spirit, with some hilarious themes in evidence; Maccamore (McIntosh), Burlingwood Mac (Burling) and Gangsta Rapp (Rapp) being three of the cleverer ones. It was Burchill’s rendition of the iconic TV theme song, 'Batman!/Burchill!', that became the earworm/meme of the day, though – earning the red house the Spirit Award.

Several parents and past students involved in the All Saints Swimming Club managed the canteen for this event – thank you all so much for your efforts – and every single Middle School staff member was on deck to officiate, motivate and spectate.

Check out the Sport section below for photos from the day and view a comprehensive rundown of the results here on FIDO.

Congratulations to Reeves House for winning the Middle School carnival!

      Mum/Dad To The Rescue!

To start the year, we are mindful that students new to Middle Earth, particularly our 7s, can be a little overwhelmed by the organisational demands of our busy calendar and so our staff give grace, and constantly reinforce the advice to (1) write reminders in their diary and (2) read FIDO News every day. Even so, many students forget to bring their sport uniform … or leave their device at home … or forget their ingredients for Home Economics … and immediately come to Middle School Administration office to call home … and ask their family to 'come to the rescue'.

Now, the phone call might conveniently reach you when it’s NOT bucketing down with rain, or you just happen to be out and about and can easily drop by … but more often than not, the request results in a significant impost on your day.

What is the worst that can happen if they don’t have their equipment? Answer: a Middle School detention – which will require them to give up 30 minutes of a lunchtime to write a reflection on how they might be better organised in future. Thus, I would argue that you are denying them a valuable learning experience by swooping in to save the day. The school has a bank of reserve devices for students to borrow if needs be, so they won’t be denied access to learning materials … so please do resist their (oftimes) impassioned demands to rescue them from “eternal embarrassment”!

      Head of Middle School

      APS Training/Trials

Please note that Season One APS Sport afternoon training commences next week for all Middle School students: 3.30-4.45pm on Monday 17 February.

Students are aware that APS training must take priority over any other co-curricular or extra-curricular commitment.

Should your child have an important commitment that clashes with this time, please liaise directly with our Director of Sport, Mr Fergus Leslie (fleslie@asas.qld.edu.au) rather than contact your child’s coach.

Parent Information Evenings and Round Table Conferences

A huge thank you to all those parents who have been able to attend the Parent Information Evenings in recent weeks.

I hope you found the evenings informative and enjoyed the opportunity to meet your child’s Core teachers to establish a solid working relationship with them.

Very soon we will be inviting parents to arrange a Round Table Conference between parent, student and teacher. Information about the dates and booking procedures for these all-important conversations will be emailed to families next week (Week 4).

      Senior School

      Senior School Swimming Carnival

One of my favourite days of the year is the Inter-House Swimming Carnival. The Senior School students continue to show an outstanding sense of spirit and determination. It is truly one of our points of difference. Our students show up, cheer loudly, support their team and swim with enthusiasm. And because of this, they also have a great time. Those in attendance certainly typified the All Saints spirit, with costumes, war cries and teamwork the order of the day. On Thursday, the thrill of intense competition was perfectly balanced by the great sense of fun and encouragement that invariably accompanies these superbly organised events.

Congratulations to the winning Houses. All the results can be found here on FIDO and a photo gallery of the day is available in the Sport section below. My sincere congratulations to every student who gave their best effort on the day, whether making a splash; cheering the swimmers; supporting their House; or ably helping behind the scenes.

Finally, a huge thank you to the staff, Heads of House, House Leaders, Mr Michael Mathews, Ms Chelsea Lane and of course our Director of Sport, Mr Fergus Leslie, for all the hard work leading up to, and on, the day.

      Parent Information Evenings

Just a final reminder that the Year 10, 11 and 12 Information Evening recordings are now on the FIDO Parent Communication pages for your viewing.

These presentations provide parents and students with invaluable details and guidance regarding academic and pastoral programs, careers and pathways, and excursions and camps.

If you have not done so yet please put aside an hour one evening soon to watch this with your student. It will provide you with invaluable information to assist in Senior School success.

      Year 12 Biology Excursion

As part of their study of Unit 3 of the QCE Biology course – Biodiversity and the Interconnectedness of Life, Year 12 Biology students ventured into the dry and wet sclerophyll forests surrounding the Numinbah Valley Environment Education Centre (NVEEC). Under the combined supervision of NVEEC staff and All Saints biology teachers, students conducted a comprehensive study investigating the effect of abiotic factors (non-living) on biotic factors (living). They also consolidated their learning relating to the importance of biodiversity, how it is impacted by fire and flood, and the adaptations that species employ to survive in this habitat.

This data collected from fieldwork enabled students to understand the interconnectedness of organisms and the physical environment and forms the basis of their IA2 Student Experiment. More importantly, however, it was an opportunity for students to explore their own backyard, become familiar with and count the abundance of native species which contribute to the biodiversity of the area, and develop skills in sampling ecological systems.

The students were such a credit to the All Saints community, embracing nature’s flora and fauna, and some challenging weather conditions. We are grateful to Ben and Mark at NVEEC, whose knowledge of the area and ecosystem management certainly enhanced our experience during our visit. My thanks also to my colleagues Mr Alec Brand and Ms Colleen O’Dea, whose enthusiasm was so appreciated on the day.

      From the Visual Art Department

The Visual Art department is very blessed to have two outstanding 2025 Visual Art Captains: Marley Campbell and Amber Peck. Both have shown exceptional dedication, creativity and leadership within the art room. Their passion for the arts, coupled with their commitment to building a supportive and inclusive art community, makes them the perfect role models for all students.

A message from Marley and Amber:
This year, our focus is on building a strong sense of community in the Art Room and encouraging students to actively engage with the world of art. To kick things off earlier this week we held a fun lunchtime Art Kahoot this week to help strengthen connections between students across years 10 - 12. The goal was to give younger students the chance to meet our Year 11 and 12 art students, who bring a wealth of experience with various mediums and assignments, and to encourage students to seek advice and support from them. It was a fun and lively session.

Looking ahead, we’re excited to announce that later this term, we’ll be hosting an Easter Art Workshop, open to everyone in the school community—students, staff, and families alike! Keep an eye out for more details and sign-up information, as spots will be limited!

      Amber:

Last year, during my Visual Arts in Practice course, I had the incredible opportunity to learn pottery throwing on the school’s pottery wheels. Since then, pottery has become a true passion of mine and a significant part of my life. I’m excited to share that I’m now selling some of my recent pottery pieces, both online and to family and friends. If anyone is interested in purchasing any of my work, I would love to hear from you!

Amber personifies what it means to study Visual Arts in Practice. This a course designed to align with real-world stimulus where students respond to authentic, real-world stimulus. Learning is connected to relevant industry practice and opportunities, promoting future employment.

Look out for Amber’s Etsy store which is launching soon!

      Splashed with Joy

In the last Saints Alive I wrote a little about Living Water and Holy Water – This week has been mightily splashed with it in the Swim Carnivals. Hot and humid, but what sheer delight to see so many students stepping up to their starting blocks and simply doing the best they can. But there were other flowings of Holy Water that I noticed since the start of school.

At the beginning of the year, Mr Evans exhorted the Senior School to follow just four rules if they want their Senior School experience to be positive and fruitful:

      • Be punctual
      • Present yourself well
      • Be kind
      • Always try your best

Mr Brendan Callaghan expounded our school culture with his usual aplomb when he added to these and reminded our students the words of Mother Theresa (herself expounding the Gospel) who said:

What you do for the least of these, you do it for Me.

What a great reminder to all of us that we all matter, just as we are, and that we should care for, and treat each other in the same way that the Benevolent Force for Good, which we might know as God, does for us. Mr C encouraged the students, en masse, to repeat these words:

I LOVE ME FOR ME! they called out loudly in unison, reminding us all that we are loved, just as we are, and we should love ourselves that way too. He certainly is a blessing to us.

When this happens, we begin to belong, rather than just fit in because to fit in always reveals our inauthentic selves, and that does not work for anyone, quite aside from the enormous effort it takes to try to be someone other than who we really are.

These first weeks have been busy weeks, thoroughly splashed with so much joy. One of my favourite moments, (how I wish I had captured it),was watching a young Junior School student swim across the pool at the Carnival. There was a moment, about two thirds through her heat, where her face lit up like the emergency lights on a dashboard. Sheer panic, as she courageously swam through it, and then the transformation into utter delight as she saw the finishing line, and …. at last … touched the edge. What a triumph! It really mattered not at all where she finished, but that she did.

A bit like the fun-filled Middle School Year 7 information night. The inimitable Mr Todd Harm ran the fun and games smartly and smoothly. What joy to see so many parents (particularly the Dads!) getting involved in the trivia fray. Laughter rolled around the auditorium in the noise and hullabaloo of Middle Earth, and I feel sure that each student, and their accompanying siblings had many stories to recount on their way home. And as I write this, they, too, are splashing their way through their heats at the Middle School Swim Carnival.

As the Global landscape wobbles its way through many trials and tribulations, how good and pleasant it is to know that at least here we relish and enjoy the good gifts which God has bestowed upon us. It is our quest to grow our beautiful students into global citizens who understand their own value, and the value of always trying their best in the interests of all humankind.

The new captain of our enterprise has been a pretty great blessing to us too – in case you had not noticed!

Until next time, may you all be entirely blessed!

An Incredible Week of Inter-House Swimming Carnivals

What a fantastic week it has been across all three Inter-House Swimming Carnivals! The energy was electric, with students proudly dressed in their house colours, chanting war cries and cheering each other on. It was wonderful to see so many students stepping up and giving it their best, even if swimming wasn’t their forte.

A big thank you also goes to our parents for their support and to all staff who contributed to making the day happen with organisation and preparation. From timekeepers, announcers, sausage sizzlers, marshals, recorders and supervisors, every role played a vital part in creating a successful and enjoyable event.

This week truly captured the spirit of community, participation and sportsmanship.

      Well done to all!

Year 3 and 5 Band Program

This week over 200 Year 3 and Year 5 students excitedly received the musical instrument that they will learn as part of the Year 5 Band program and Year 3 Strings Program in semester 1.

All Year 3 and Year 5 students at school take part in the String and Band Program respectively for a semester, giving them a taste of learning a musical instrument and playing in an ensemble. Many students continue their musical journey, some throughout their whole school lives (and beyond). Even if they don’t, the experience of performing in a musical ensemble is one which will be treasured.

Best wishes to these students, and we look forward to seeing your instrumental learning journey over the next two terms.

Our small ensembles kicked off their rehearsals this week as well and are already sounding amazing, we’re really excited for what’s to come this year! Congratulations to all students who auditioned for our Jazz bands and string orchestras. The Holloway is alive with the sound of music.
