A Conversation With Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri

As I write this week the world is once again watching helplessly (and perhaps hopelessly too) as the powder keg that is the Middle East bursts into flame. As always, thousands of innocents desperately trying to live their lives in peace will pay the ultimate price for living in this troubled part of the world.

I remember way back in 2011 going to visit my mother in England. On the plane on my way home I found myself sitting next to a most august Muslim gentleman, dressed in impeccable robes with a splendid taqiyah perched on his head. I greeted him warmly (I am every traveller’s worst nightmare, entirely devoted to engaging my neighbours in conversation when they would much prefer to be left in peace) and was a little disappointed when my greeting was unacknowledged. I decided to allow the poor man ten minutes ‘settling in’ time before attempting re-engagement and reached for my book. A few minutes after take-off I felt his hand on my arm and he said in perfect English “I am very sorry; you must think I am rather rude. I was praying when you greeted me. My name is Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri and it is a pleasure to meet you.”

There followed a most electrifying conversation during which my new friend revealed himself as the man who had declared a ‘fatwa on terrorism’ in May 2010, receiving worldwide attention, not all of it of the most welcome kind, in the process. He has written over 1,000 books, five hundred of which have been published and now spends his time travelling the world to expose the lie that anyone who commits acts of violence can dare to call him or herself a follower of Islam. He is a man of remarkable courage, an ambassador of peace who has, for his pains, attracted a considerable bounty on his head from those fringe elements who prefer chaos and mayhem to peace. His stance against the ‘ideological infection’ of terrorism is unequivocal. He too was travelling to Australia to give a series of talks in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane and having spent such a pleasant and engaging time in conversation with him, I determined to attend his talk at the Islamic School of Brisbane.

What a remarkable occasion this turned out to be! Dr. Tahir-ul-Qadri spoke on the topic of ‘jihad’, explaining how the word had been hi-jacked and totally misrepresented by the harbingers of war. The word is mentioned 32 times in the Qur’an and on only two occasions does it refer to fighting or warfare. Yet somehow we have allowed the word to come to mean ‘holy war’ in its present usage. The Qur’an allows five different interpretations of the word ‘jihad’. It has a spiritual dimension, involving a personal jihad to cleanse oneself of impure thoughts and actions through prayer and devotion. It has an economic context involving the need to give charity to others, to feed the poor and house the homeless. It has an intellectual context, calling Muslims to spread knowledge throughout the world in the search for enlightenment. It has a social context, requiring all followers of Islam to work for justice and equality and in the two contexts where it involves fighting, it refers to the right for Muslims to defend their homeland when invaded by foreign aggressors. The Qur’an expressly forbids aggression of any kind towards others except for self-defence.

Perhaps the most impressive aspect of Dr. Tahir-ul-Qadri’s address was the way in which it represented mainstream Islam as devoted to peace and the welfare of all humanity. We hear so often from and about the radical elements of the Muslim faith because their actions tend to be sensational and therefore newsworthy. If only there were more people with the courage to speak up about the benevolent intentions of the vast majority of Muslims worldwide. Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri certainly opened my eyes and heart, and it was such a delight to make his acquaintance all those years ago. I think of him often and especially at times when terrorism and mayhem are dominating the airwaves.

    YEAR 4 CAMP

Year 4 adventured to the Bornhoffen Leadership Development Centre earlier this week for their annual camp. The beautiful landscape and surrounds provided a picturesque background for the fun and friendship that encapsulated camp activities. The kids were amazing, as usual, though perhaps weary after a few over-excited and sleepless nights. I’m sure many tales were shared upon their return.

A huge thank you to the staff who attended. It’s a big ask for them to leave their own families to look after students around the clock, but they do it with such incredible love, care and commitment.

    THANK YOU P&F ASSOCIATION
Our amazing Parents & Friends Association have done it again; showering the Junior School with their generous support. Each year in Term 4 our Prep students swim during PE classes for the first time. Our beautiful outdoor pool sits in a bit of a wind tunnel, so on these pre-summer days it can get very cool for small swimmers. Keeping our students in the water and moving as much as possible is our aim so that they don’t have to clamber in and out (exposing themselves to cool breezes), but this has proven a challenge in the past.

Thanks to the P&F, we have been able to purchase specially designed underwater steps that sit along the side of the pool. These allow our little ones to stand up and rest, all while staying in the warmer water during their swimming lessons. In addition to these stands, the P&F have sponsored the purchase of some large house banners which we will place on the fences to minimize the wind tunnel effect.

    Thanks again to the P&F!

    BARRY’S FIRST FLIGHT

Another beautiful inquiry project took a special turn this week with Year 1 students releasing the butterflies they have nurtured and observed in classes since they arrived as chrysalises a couple of weeks ago. The Year 1s watched in wonderment and awe as their butterflies took flight, heading straight for the flower gardens.

    Future Leaders Finding Their Feet

As our Year 5 students work through their final term before becoming Junior School's 2024 Year 6 Leaders, we recently spent some time preparing them for the exciting leadership responsibilities and opportunities that await.

We facilitated a Future Leaders workshop experience which involved a day of team building, interpersonal skill development and goal setting, all with a focus on developing emerging leadership skills and talents. Year 5 teachers and other staff from across the school led a series of workshops designed to promote important leadership practices such as cooperation, trust, communication and inclusivity.

The workshops were specifically designed to encourage reflection and consideration about the type of leaders our young people are aspiring to become:

    • Collaborative Leadership, led by Mrs Chirio
    • Conflict Resolution Skills, led by Mrs McCarthy
    • What sort of leader do you want to be? Goal setting, led by Mrs Travers
    • The All Saints Leadership Process, led by Mr Halcro
    • What Ancient Wisdom Can Teach Young Leaders, led by Mr Wainright
    • Servant Leadership: Leadership Through Action, led by Mrs Daly and Mr Harm
    • My Wellbeing Seesaw: Balancing Goals and Emotions, led by Mrs Boman
    • My Leadership Vision Board, led by Mrs Buckley

There were many opportunities throughout the day for the Year 5 students to explore their character strengths, build upon friendships and reflect upon their hopes and goals for their final year in the Junior School. We asked them to consider the leader they hope to be and look at ways in which we can help them achieve their goals. We hope to give our young people opportunities to explore their developing understanding of the concept of leadership, as well as the challenges and responsibilities that entails.

We completed a fantastic day with a Leadership Forum where we invited community leaders to bravely field questions from our future leaders. We heard personal stories and wisdom from each of our panelists who each very generously shared anecdotes, thoughts and advice on leadership and reflections of their own journeys. It was powerful way to finish the day. Thank you to this year’s panelists (please see bio’s attached):

    • Mr Patrick Wallas - Headmaster
    • Luke O’Dwyer - All Saints dad, former Australian rugby league legend and businessman
    • Alli Simpson - All Saints graduate, TV personality, musician, social media influencer
    • Melinda Richards - All Saints mum, author, businesswoman and social commentator
    • Tara Sabet - School Captain 2023
    • Kyan Sutcliffe - School Vice-Captain 2023
    • Violet Wilson - Year 6 Leader 2023

We are very keen to invest in the leadership potential of our future leaders and to share our faith and belief in them. I am sure that you will hear many wonderful reflections of the day’s experiences.

Eligibility for End of Year Prizes

At the various Parent Information Evenings to start the year, we flagged the following benchmarks for a student to be eligible to receive an Academic Prize:

      • In Year 7, 8 and 9, considering all summative assessment tasks completed across both semesters, a student who has attained a B+ average or above in English, Geography, History, Mathematics and Science
      • Additionally, in Year 9, a subject prize will be awarded to the top student for the year in each of the elective subjects.

There’s a lot to unpack here, but perhaps the most vexing questions are as follows:

WHAT COUNTS AS SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT? Students have completed a kaleidoscope of tasks throughout the year – all valid and important steps in their learning journey – but each Core subject has clearly designated one or two summative tasks each term. These tasks were characterised by a task sheet (with an accompanying rubric/marking schema) and were cross-marked and moderated by the relevant teaching team.

HOW DO WE AVERAGE OUT THE MARKS? Week 4 will be the cut-off in terms of summative assessment tasks contributing to your child’s eligibility for an Academic Prize; however, any tasks completed after that date will still contribute to their end-of-year report. During Week 4, staff will globalise results across all the Standard Elaborations we have been assessing to arrive at an interim Standard of Achievement for each subject. Some students, on profile, will clearly meet the requirements of the B+ average, but no doubt there will be some borderline candidates who might be painfully close to the designated cut-off point. In these instances, there will be consultation between the relevant Core teacher, Year Level Coordinator and Mrs Marnie Wainwright (Assistant Head of Middle School: Curriculum) to ensure that the final list of awardees appropriately reflects the expectations of the assessment program negotiated by each year level this year.

The finalised list of award recipients will be acknowledged, in alphabetical order, at their respective Celebration Evening. It is important to note, though, that the number of Academic Prizes awarded each year may vary, but the standards and criteria for eligibility (a B+ average) will not.

Additionally, while the School obviously wishes to celebrate academic excellence with all the pomp and ceremony it can muster, there are other attributes a student might have that are of equal importance to the All Saints community. Thus, alongside Academic Awards, each year level’s Celebration Evening will see Endeavour Awards and Citizenship Awards bestowed.

      ENDEAVOUR AWARDS
These are awarded to exemplary students who have consistently demonstrated diligence of the highest order across all aspects of their curricular and co-curricular program at the School.

      CITIZENSHIP AWARDS
These are awarded to exemplary students who have consistently demonstrated genuine respect for the rights of others, made valued contributions to their class group and established positive relationships with students and staff. Year 9 Middle School Leaders are typically ineligible for this award.

We sincerely hope that the process outlined above will allow students to continue to set high academic goals and know, with great assurance, if they are online to meet their targets. If you have any questions, please contact either your child’s Core Teachers or myself.

      Threads Middle School Recap

Last Monday 9 October, the Nairn Theatre was transformed into a Hollywood red-carpet runway for the annual Threads fashion showcase, featuring students from Years 9 to 12.

As part of the evening, more than 60 Year 9 students graced the catwalk wearing outfits they created as part of the Food & Fashion Design Elective. The sense of poise and fun they all radiated as they strutted their stuff was a joy to behold, and the intense preparations for the day clearly created a wonderful bond between staff and students. Speaking of staff, a huge thank you to our resident frock fairies – Mrs Melinda Pascoe, Mrs Jane Campbell, Ms Kelly Farrer, Mrs Bernadette Callaghan and Mrs Sue Tucker – for their tireless work during and outside lesson time to help prepare the students and their garments. Local fashion designer, Lisa Brown, once again donated fabric and time towards a design challenge for our students which added an extra dimension to the creativity, skill and courage on show. While all the students presented superbly well, the following prizes were awarded:

      • Year 9 Technical Skills Award: Isabella Gaddes, Jessica Hewes, Zahra Walker, Jessalin Yang, Ariana Won, Bethany Won
      • Year 9 Most Improved Student: Angelina Morgan
      • Year 9 Most Resilient Student: Sarah Fleming, Cooper Foster-Brown
      • Winner of the Lisa Brown Challenge: Pin-Sin Su

Visual Art Excursion an Authentic Experience

On Monday 16 October, Year 10 and 11 visual art Students embarked on a journey to Brisbane, where with utmost enthusiasm and curiosity we explored the city's artistic treasures.

The day began at the Queensland Museum, where we met with artist Deb Mostert who regularly frequents the museum and creates artworks in response to the fascinating taxidermy and insect displays. Following an enlightening talk about her work, Deb demonstrated drawing from the exhibits, and we were then able to leaf through her amazing visual art books. Such talent! They were so inspiring and encouraged us all to make the most of our time drawing from the array of preserved creatures.

The day continued as we walked across the Karilpur Bridge, taking in its tensegrity-inspired design and the breathtaking vistas of the Brisbane River. At the Museum of Brisbane, nestled within the majestic Town Hall, we explored exhibits of Brisbane city and contemporary ceramics.

A ferry ride on the City Cat cooled us down from the heat of the day and carried us to our final destination: Brisbane Powerhouse. Here we ventured among the dramatic, hard-edge, industrial building to enjoy the diverse exhibits in the Portrait Prize Exhibition.

Throughout the day we had sketchbooks and recording devices in hand, diligently capturing sights and sounds, and collecting various paraphernalia, all in preparation for our future individual artistic inquiries.

This immersive experience not only expanded our artistic horizons but was testament to the power of authentic experiences in igniting our imaginations.

                    Musical Showcase

The 2023 Musical Showcase was again a spectacular evening.

The students’ commitment to music and their amazing ability was evident on Thursday night.

From the student-devised Year 12 final performance and an amazing Finale with more than 150 students in perfect sync on stage, to the fabulous ensembles, the mesmerising operatic performance of Honor Nicholson, the pitch perfect choirs (with dance moves), through to the big band swing spectacular, it was an amazing demonstration of talent.

The whole All Saints community certainly share in the admiration and sense of pride that our Performing Arts department brings to the School.

I would like to congratulate and thank the musicians, the technical crew, staff and our Director of Performing Arts, Mr Owen Clarke, on a superb evening of entertainment.

It again showcased the vast pool of student and staff talent at All Saints. It is such a strength of our School to have the musical opportunities and expertise that the staff offer to our talented students.

Photos of the night can be found in Mr Owen Clarke's article What a Night at Musical Showcase in the Performing Arts section of this Saints Alive.

                    Parents & Friends

                    Join the P&F in 2024

It’s that wonderful time of year, when parents have the opportunity to join the Parents & Friends Committee of All Saints.

The Parents & Friends Association (P&F) is an integral part of the All Saints community. The philosophy of the Association is that "Funds are raised only after friends are raised; and that without the building of a community spirit and the establishment of friendships little else can be achieved."

                    So, what do we do?

The objectives of the P&F are to:

                    • Provide opportunities for the school's parents to connect and build friendships
                    • Foster and promote the interests of students at the School
                    • Foster parent-teacher-student understanding and communication
                    • Assist in the improvement and maintenance of the school facilities

The P&F is run by a committee of dedicated parents, who meet twice a term, to support the school and our school community. Meetings are also attended the Heads of all three sub-schools, our School Chaplain, Head of Marketing and Community Engagement, and Headmaster.

                    JOIN THE P&F IN 2024
As 2024 is going to be a very busy year, and also our Fair year, we would ask that you carefully consider your ability to commit your time, not only to attend our meetings, but also to be available to assist at our P&F events. It is a substantial commitment, but very rewarding as well.

We have limited vacancies available this year, so we will process applications based on the date and time of their receipt within the nomination window.

Applications will open 8.00am tomorrow Saturday 21 October and close midnight on Wednesday 1 November.

To apply, please fill out the form below.

Parent Coordinators' Morning Tea: Farewell Jenny!

This morning we held a thank you morning tea for all our wonderful year level parent coordinators. We also took this opportunity to bid a fond farewell to Jenny Parer, who has been an integral part of our P&F community for many years.

As her youngest of six children prepares to graduate this year, Jenny concludes her official role as P&F Parent Coordinator. Her impact on our community has been immeasurable. Jenny's unwavering commitment has been instrumental in fostering unity, collaboration, and support among us.

Jenny, along with her husband Warwick, has worked tirelessly behind the scenes, orchestrating numerous events, including many unforgettable P&F Balls and the ever popular All Saints Fair. These initiatives have not only enriched the lives of our school community but have also strengthened the bonds between parents, teachers, and students.

Jenny's pivotal role always be remembered, and she will be sorely missed. We extend our heartfelt thanks for her extraordinary contributions.

We also extend a huge thank you to all our year level parent coordinators for your support and helping foster a sense of community and belonging among our year level groups.

If you would like to become (or continue as) a year level parent coordinator in 2024, keep an eye on FIDO and Saints Alive early next year. We will be hosting a welcome morning tea for all parent coordinators in Week 4.

What a Night at Musical Showcase

Our Middle and Senior Musicians presented an amazing performance last night in the Nairn Theatre, showcasing their ensemble and solo playing at its best at Musical Showcase 2023. It was a particularly emotional and thrilling night for our Year 12s, whose final performance was a triumph.

It is difficult to choose highlights, as it was class all round. However, I did like the 120-piece band accompanying the Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire movie montage, the beautiful Song from Justice with all the girls voices from Middle and Senior Choirs, accompanied by our star string players All Saints Camerata, and of course the Pirates of the Caribbean medley by Senior Strings. Our Finale One Day More from Les Misérables was spectacular. On stage were 150 performers including 11 soloists! Amazing.

Congratulations to all students and thank you.

                      Students Receive Prestigious Grant

Two All Saints students have been awarded a $500 grant by the Gold Coast Eisteddfod Friends of the Arts Foundation. Only six students received these awards, and we are very proud of Tristan Pofandt (Trombone) and Scarlett Thorpe (Drama) who were among them.

Tristan and Scarlett (pictured above) contribute fully to our Performing Arts at All Saints, and it is just reward for the effort and dedication they show to their respective disciplines.

Staff Achievements, AFL Stars, Basketball Champions and Touch Teams

APS Sport Round 6 against AB Paterson this week (boys home) marks the culmination of what feels like one of our busiest fortnights yet, however I am delighted to share several notable achievements; and this time, some of our staff have hit the headlines.

Two of our senior teachers Ms Renee Cacciola and Ms Peta Aucoin, after a brilliant year with the Robina Roos and Burleigh Bombers respectively, stocked up on Voltaren to don the cleats for another six games after being selected to represent Queensland at the National AFL master’s Competition in Maroochydore.

Despite finishing runners up, losing only narrowly to ACT in a bruising final, both expressed immense joy at still being able to participate at such a competitive level.

We're delighted to share that Ms Cacciola earned a spot in the All Australian 40's team, which is an outstanding accomplishment.

                      AFL 11
                      AFL 10
                      AFL 12
                      AFL 13
                      AFL 14

Talking about staff, we are so fortunate to have so many dedicated teachers who continue to give their time, passion, and expertise to sporting endeavours outside of their expected hours of employment.

Last weekend Mr Dale Quain, Mr Will Atkinson, Mr Fergus Leslie, Ms Georgia Liuissi and Mr Ross Kingsley, supported by parents Luke black and Jeff White, travelled to the Sunshine Coast with our talented Junior and Senior AFL Boys to play in the highly competitive StreetSmarts AFLQ Schools Cup.

The Seniors secured a third-place finish overall, while the junior team agonisingly lost in the Grand Final, which is a wonderful accomplishment considering the depth of talent across the State.

Similarly, Mr Bryn Evans and Miss Robinson took teams to the CBSQ State Basketball Championships, where students from Years 8 to 10 performed admirably, securing a fourth-place finish in their division. All of these opportunities contribute to the vibrant sporting culture we enjoy at All Saints, and we extend our heartfelt thanks to both the staff, parents and students for supporting such a breadth of sporting experiences.

With the end of the sports season on the horizon, we have two rounds left to play. The first is against AB Paterson (Week 3, Round 6) and then Somerset College (Week 4, Round 7) before the finals in Week 5 on 3 November. We encourage you to motivate your children to make the most of the final training opportunities and competitive fixtures as we bring Season 2 to a close. Every team will play a final so there is lots to rally for. Please support an enthusiastic and motivated finish.

                      AFLQ STATE CUP FINALS
All Saints had a junior and senior boys team compete at this year's AFLQ State Cup Finals.

In a closely contested preliminary final, the senior team narrowly lost to St Laurence's College. However, the boys bounced back and were crowned the third-best school team in Queensland after convincingly defeating St Augustine's College.

The Junior School team achieved remarkable success, surpassing the senior boys by reaching the Grand Final on Saturday after securing the top spot in their pool on Friday.

Although the boys put up a great fight against a strong Villanova side, they couldn't secure the win and finished as the state's runners-up. We applaud our students, coaches, teachers and supportive parents for their dedication to AFL at the school.

                      JUNIOR SECONDARY BASKETBALL STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
Between October 12-15, All Saints competed in the Champion Basketball School of Queensland tournament.

All Saints fielded a team in the Junior Secondary Division, comprised of students from Years 8 to 10, who competed against the top basketball schools from around Queensland.

                      The team:

                      • Liam Alderson
                      • Archie Evans
                      • Denzyl Bianchin
                      • Jack Butterworth
                      • Campbell Couch
                      • William de Ambrosis
                      • Kai Hayden
                      • Lucas Lu
                      • Ash Woolnough

They played brilliant basketball, but most importantly were a delight to coach and were fine representatives of All Saints. The team went undefeated through the pool phase to progress to the knockout rounds. Two more fantastic wins saw them in the Semi Finals where they played a great game but went down in a close contest with St Patrick’s College from Mackay. On Sunday, the team ran into a fired-up St Laurence’s squad who were playing their best basketball. The All Saints boys were a credit to themselves battling hard to the end and winning the second half, but the damage was done. They missed out on bronze, but it was a very successful performance they should be proud of. Many thanks to Miss Tanya Robinson who again gave up her time to coach this team and to the supportive parents who were so helpful, doing the score bench and cheering the team on throughout the week.

                      Well done to all.

                      Bryn Evans

                      Head of Senior School

ALL SCHOOLS TOUCH FOOTBALL: 15 YEAR GIRLS
I had the privilege of coaching the 15 Years Girls All Schools Touch team for 2023.

It was a great honour to lead a talented group of young ladies to represent All Saints at such a high level of touch football competition at Runaway Bay.

Despite facing some tough opposition, our team secured a respectable 7th place in their pool.

I couldn't be prouder of the girls' unwavering determination and never-give-up attitude. These promising athletes are ones to watch in the future of women’s sport. Through this experience, they have grown into more formidable players and I am confident they will finish the APS season on a stronger note.

                        Chaplaincy

Thank you to the People who Enrich the Lives of our Students

Usually Saints Alive is all about our students, which is exactly as it should be.

Occasionally, and without any intention beyond that of Gratitude, I sense it is important to mention some of the people who enrich the lives of our students, often quietly and without acclaim.

The deep cohesion and enthusiasm of the wonderful people with whom I feel so privileged to work is a gift beyond measure, to the students, the school and certainly to each other.

It is clear from the Biblical narrative that Jesus regularly drew apart from other people to reflect and pray in solitude. It is equally evident that he similarly retreated with the apostles, his ministry team, to a place where they could be together, learn and refresh their souls in a way which energised for the work that lay ahead.

It was with this in mind that our Headmaster encouraged and accompanied our Chaplaincy team to spend a day away from school on Monday this week. The beautiful gardens of Marian Valley Monastery embraced us with a very warm welcome as we unpacked and discussed the Christian Wisdom Tradition which seems to fit so well with our culture.

Our Team is blessed with a Lay Chaplain in each of the sub-schools, as well as a Service Learning Coordinator.

The warm-hearted, Godly-moment inspirer Ms Milissa Gustafson delights Junior School students wherever she goes. Mrs Renee Applewaite is new to the team this year and has quickly endeared herself to Middle Earth with her infectious laughter and love of Jesus which shines brightly into everything she does.

Mr Brendan Callaghan, who moved from Middle School to Senior School this year exudes the Love which is God everywhere he possibly can. Mrs Louise Thorpe is also a new addition to the Chaplaincy family, and what a treasure she has proved to be. A dual role of Service Learning and Chaplaincy Administration has kept her dancing, and in the space of just a year she has offered her heart and soul into all whom she meets.

From classroom to Chapel and to pastoral care, these are very special people. When the inspirational faith and life of Mr Wallas is added to the mix, we can rejoice that God certainly smiles upon us.

                        With blessings to you all,

                        Mother Ann McGuinness

Service Learning Spirit in Term 4

Throughout Term 4, our students will continue to serve the community in meaningful ways that authentically connect to the curriculum.

Year 11 Health Students will serve people experiencing homelessness and other individuals in crisis. These valuable visits to the St John's Crisis Centre provide a wonderful opportunity for students to not only interact with staff and visitors, but to educate themselves as to the many services St John's provides for those in need.

Additionally, Year 7 students are in the process of gathering Christmas food and gift donations for St John's as part of their class-based Christmas Compassion Projects in Christian Living.
