Busy and Wonderful Times

So much has been happening these last two weeks that it is hard to know where to begin. On Tuesday evening last week we had the magic that is the Threads fashion show with its daring theme of ‘Untamed.’ The outfits on display were truly stunning and congratulations are due to all who took part, to the backstage helpers, to the video crew who immortalised the evening and of course to Skye Daniels and her amazing team. It was a glorious celebration of that creative energy that brings so much joy and light to our community.

The following afternoon we were able to congratulate over 60 of our senior students for successfully achieving their Diploma of Business qualification. It is a most demanding course that requires dedication and again, creativity and it was so pleasing to see all of those enrolled passing with flying colours.

Then on Thursday we enjoyed a superb concert in the chapel featuring our choirs and our strings. All who attended were mesmerised by the virtuosity on display and once again our amazing performing artists and their incredible teachers did us proud. That same evening we enjoyed the Chairman’s Dinner – an evening hosted by John Fradgley for all those students (and their parents), who began their life at All Saints as Pre Preppies and who are graduating as Year 12s this year. It is always such a special evening, and our student speakers, Priscilla Musolino and Jake Thistlethwaite spoke beautifully in thanking the parents and the staff of All Saints.

The pace has hardly slowed this week. On Wednesday afternoon, we enjoyed a delightful whole school assembly, the last opportunity for the entire school to gather this year. During the assembly, we proudly celebrated our very deserving Foundation Day Award winners: Dylan Andriano and Joshua Edwards (Junior School), Lily Penwarn and Keanu Paunde-Schaffer (Middle School), and Georgia Normile and Alexander Galt (Senior School). The Headmaster was then farewelled in the most enchanting and joyful way, complete with a surprise magic act of my own! (See photos below).

Earlier that morning, I was surprised to see almost all of the Class of 2024 appear in my back garden at 7.20am to deliver lovely cards and wish me well. They, in turn, were met with the rather unsightly spectacle of Mr Wallas in his dressing gown!

On Thursday night we sat back in the Nairn Theatre for Musical Showcase and were transported by the 200 or so musicians and their conductors for a night of incredible virtuosity and fun. The talent on display was simply breathtaking. Our Middle School ensembles are playing so beautifully at present and the finale, a stirring rendition of Skyfall with 150 students on stage, is something I will never forget. It was emotional evening with 34 of our Year 12 musicians moving on, but the quality on display in our younger ensembles suggests that all is well for the future of music at All Saints. Congratulations to Owen Clarke and his phenomenal team of musicians for bringing such joy to the audience.

On Friday night we celebrate the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme participants. We have 10 students receiving their Gold Award with another 10 or so very close to reaching this significant milestone.

Finally, on Sunday we are gathering for the P&F Golf Day which is always such a fun-filled occasion. Some of the costumes are hilarious and a good time is had by all.

So busy times at All Saints, and wonderful times too.

A Busy Start to Term 4

It’s certainly been another busy, learning filled fortnight in the Junior School. Unfortunately, a few poorly timed, pick-up time thunder storms have caused a few challenges but everyone’s patience and understanding has ensured our young people have all safely made it into cars, albeit a little soaked and soggy. Thank you.

A few of my highlights this fortnight include:

      Year 3 Sleepover
Not so much sleep but plenty of fun time with friends was had at this year's sleepover. A big day of camp activities including damper making and camp skills around a campfire, rock climbing and archery didn’t even make a dent in energy levels and our Year 3 adventurers then enjoyed an evening of games and friendship together here at school.

Setting up sleeping bags and camp beds in the JFC was a highlight for 75 very excited littlies as was dinner and breakfast in the Heart + Soul Cafe. A huge thank you to our Year 3 teaching team, Mrs Foote and Mr Kingsley for leading the fun.

      Year 1 Minibeasts Incursion

Year 1 had a visit from Wild Rangers as part of their Minibeast inquiry. I can’t believe how brave they were actually holding cockroaches, spiders and lizards as they learned about the important role these creatures play in keeping our earth healthy.

Year 6 Girls Afternoon High Tea

This beautiful afternoon hosted by Emma from Pippin Girl marked the culmination of our resilience and wellbeing program for our Year 6 girls. They spent an afternoon together strengthening their understanding of each other as they prepare to take Middle School on. The aim of this program, spearheaded by our ever-inspiring Mrs Buckley, is to empower every girl as she navigates the tricky world of a pre-teen. Emma leads the girls into some wonderfully honest and real conversations about growing and self-care.

      Year 6 Boys Night In

The Year 6 boys and their dads also spent an introspective evening at school with Tommy Herschel from Find Ya Feet. Tommy’s focus, 'Empowering aspiring legends', hit the mark and lots of personal stories of growth, courage and friendship were shared. The boys, young and young-at-heart, also shared a BBQ dinner and few games together forging even deeper friendships and understandings as they prepare for Middle School. Thanks again to Mrs Buckley for coordinating and Mr van Twest, Mr Holt and Mr Cowan for their help during the evening.

      Chess Tournament

Another successful day of strategy and checkmating for our Junior School Chess team was held at Clover Hill this week. Three red ribbons awarded to Will, Henry and Kobe but lots of great moves and well played games by all. Thanks to Mrs Kenworthy for chaperoning and taking such great action shots!

      Starlight Foundation Giveathon Luncheon

Our first ever Giveathon fundraiser for parents was a resounding success thanks to the kindness, compassion, generosity and commitment of many. It was standing room only as ticket sales maxed out to this special event that saw All Saints family, the Steffe’s, sharing their difficult medical journey in the hope of raising awareness and much needed funds for the Starlight Foundation, the Junior Schools Giveathon charity for 2024.

Captain Starlight, the Foundations iconic hero, has helped them navigate many challenges while their youngest daughter Mia-Rose traversed some very difficult times in hospital. Special guests from the Starlight Foundation were overwhelmed by the generosity of our families but so impressed and inspired by this example of our school community coming together to support a family during a time of distress for them.

This beautiful, and scrumptious, luncheon was catered for by our talented senior Hospitality students and hosted by All Saints mum, Eva Millic. Thank you to all families who supported this special event and particularly to Mrs. Romy Ristrucia who coordinated this event.

      2025 Step Up Morning

In just a few weeks, all Junior School students will take part in an exciting new initiative, Step Up Morning. During this time, students will spend part of the day in their 2025 classes and, wherever possible, meet their new teachers. We believe this orientation will help ease any nerves associated with the important transition to the next school year. Keep an eye out for more details and logistics coming next week!

Last term, Mrs Buckley wrote about the process of class placement undertaken and asked parents to trust the Junior School team and the process. The process of placing every child into their next year's class groups is an incredibly complex one and our teachers take great care and time to get the new combinations as balanced as possible.

We understand that this annual change can create some nerves but, once again, ask that parents trust us and encourage your children to embrace the change as an exciting opportunity.

      Future Leaders

As our Year 5 students work through their final term before becoming our All Saints Junior School Year 6 Leaders of 2025 we took some time recently to begin preparing them for the exciting leadership responsibilities and opportunities that await.

We facilitated a Future Leaders workshop experience for them which involved a day of team building, interpersonal skill development and goal setting, all with a focus on developing their emerging leadership skills and talents. Year 5 teachers and leaders from across the school led a series of workshops designed to promote important leadership practices such as cooperation, trust, communication and inclusivity.

The workshops were specifically designed to encourage reflection and consideration about the type of leaders our young people aspire to become:

      • Collaborative Leadership – led by Mrs Chirio
      • Conflict Resolution Skills – led by Mrs McCarthy
      • What Sort of Leader Do You Want to Be? Goal Setting – led by Mrs Travers
      • The All Saints Leadership Process – led by Mr Halcro
      • What Ancient Wisdom Can Teach Young Leaders – led by Mr Wainright
      • Servant Leadership: Leadership Through Action – led by Mrs Daly and Mr Harm
      • My Wellbeing Seesaw: Balancing Goals and Emotions – led by Mrs Boman
      • My Leadership Vision Board – led by Mrs Buckley

There were many opportunities throughout the day for the Year 5 students to explore their character strengths, build upon friendships and reflect upon their hopes and goals for their final year in the Junior School. We asked them to consider the leader they hope to be and look at ways in which we can help them achieve their goals. We hope to give our young people opportunities to explore their developing understanding of the concept of leadership, as well as the challenges and responsibilities that entails.

We completed a fantastic day with a Leadership Forum where we invited community leaders to bravely field questions from our future leaders. We heard personal stories and wisdom from each of our panelists who each very generously shared anecdotes, thoughts and advice on leadership and reflections of their own journeys. It was powerful way to finish the day. Thank you to this year’s panelists:

      • Mr Wallas – adored Headmaster
      • Mr Bodhi Uwland – All Saints alumni and AFL Suns legend.
      • Mr David Paddock – All Saints dad, Detective with the QPS
      • Mrs Eva Millic – All Saints mum, News Reporter for Channel 9
      • Alexander Galt – All Saints School Captain 2024
      • Yvette Challen – All Saints Vice-Captain 2024
      • Poppy Sayce – Year 6 Leader 2024

We are very keen to invest in the leadership potential of our future leaders and to share our faith and belief in them. I am sure that you will hear many wonderful reflections of the day’s experiences.

      End of Year Celebration Evenings

Plans are well underway for our series of Christmas celebration evenings with dates and times available on FIDO.

The thought of our Junior School community coming together to celebrate not only Christmas, but the end of another wonderful year always fills me with excitement. Parents will receive more information in the coming weeks outlining logistical plans. I do hope you are able to join us.

We understand that every year there are scheduling conflicts between our special school events and external Christmas concerts for dance schools and other external commitments. In a Pre Prep to Year 12 school, sharing spaces, resources and dates is always a complex puzzle, which sometimes results in families having to make difficult choices. I truly wish we could find dates and times that accommodate everyone, but our wonderful school is such a busy and vibrant place that these overlaps are sometimes inevitable.

      Shelley Travers
      Head of Junior School

      The Giving Tree

This year, we are excited to partner with a new charity, St John's Crisis Centre, as part of our annual Christmas gift appeal. We will be collecting donations of children's gifts for our Giving Tree, which will be displayed in the Junior School Library.

This project helps Gold Coast families in need during Christmas time, a financially difficult time of the year for many families. Our gift giving focus will be on new toys and gifts for children up to the age of 16, and we would love you to consider making a donation.

When donating, the organisation has kindly asked if you could wrap using clear cellophane or place an unwrapped present in a gift bag. Please take your gifts to the Junior School Library. This is another wonderful opportunity for children to embrace the Christmas spirit of giving this season and experience the truth of that well known scripture: It is more blessed to give than receive.

Your generosity will help brighten the festive season for those in need, and we are grateful for your support.

      Shelley Travers
      Head of Junior School

          End of Year Prizes

At the various Parent Information Evenings to start the year, we flagged the following benchmarks for a student to be eligible to receive an Academic Prize:

          • In Year 7, 8 and 9, considering all Summative assessment tasks completed across both semesters, a student who has attained a B+ average in English, Geography, History, Mathematics and Science;
          • Additionally, In Year 9, a subject prize will be awarded to the top student for the year in each of the Elective subjects.

There’s a lot to unpack here, but perhaps the most vexing questions are as follows:

What counts as ‘Summative’ assessment? Students have completed a kaleidoscope of tasks throughout the year – all valid and important steps in their learning journey – but each Core subject has clearly designated one or two Summative tasks each term. These tasks were characterised by a task sheet (with accompanying rubric/marking schema) and were cross-marked and moderated by the relevant teaching team.

How do we ‘average’ out the marks? Week 4 will be the cut-off in terms of Summative assessment tasks contributing to your child’s eligibility for an Academic Prize; however, any tasks completed after that date will still contribute to their end-of-year report. During Week 4, staff will globalise results across all the Standard Elaborations we have been assessing to arrive at an interim Standard of Achievement for each subject. Some students, on profile, will clearly meet the requirements of the B+ average, but no doubt there will be some borderline candidates who might be painfully close to the designated cut-off point. In these instances, there will be consultation between the relevant Core teacher, Year Level Coordinator and Mrs Marnie Wainwright (Assistant Head of Middle School: Curriculum) to ensure that the final list of awardees appropriately reflects the expectations of the assessment program negotiated by each year level this year.

The finalised list of award recipients will be acknowledged, in alpha order, at their respective Celebration Evening. It is important to note, though, that the number of Academic Prizes awarded each year may vary, but the standards and criteria for eligibility (a B+ average) will not.

Additionally, while the School obviously wishes to celebrate academic excellence with all the pomp and ceremony it can muster, there are other attributes a student might have that are of equal importance to the All Saints community. Thus, alongside Academic Awards, each year level’s Celebration Evening will celebrate the following:

          Endeavour Awards
to exemplary students who have consistently demonstrated diligence of the highest order across all aspects of their curricular and co-curricular program at the School.

          Citizenship Awards
to exemplary students who have consistently demonstrated genuine respect for the rights of others, made valued contributions to their class group, and established positive relationships with students and staff. Year 9 Middle School Leaders are typically ineligible for this award.

We sincerely hope that the process outlined above will allow students to continue to set high academic goals and know, with great assurance, if they are online to meet their targets. If you have any questions, though, please contact either your child’s Core Teacher or me at tharm@asas.qld.edu.au.

          Threads

Last Tuesday 8 October, the Nairn Theatre was transformed into a jungle for the annual showcase of Year 9-12 student fashion called Threads. As part of the evening, over 50 Year 9 students graced the catwalk wearing the outfits they created as part of their Food & Fashion Design Elective. The sense of poise and fun they all radiated as they strutted their stuff was a joy to behold, and the intense preparations for the day clearly created a wonderful bond between staff and students. Speaking of staff, a huge thank you to our resident ‘frock fairies’ – Mrs Melinda Pascoe, Mrs Jane Campbell and Mrs Alana A’Vard – for their tireless work during and outside lesson time to help prepare the students and their garments. Local fashion designer, Lisa Brown, once again donated fabric and time towards her ‘design challenge’ as well … adding a whole extra dimension to the creativity, skill and courage on show.

While all the students presented superbly well, the following prizes were awarded:

          • Year 9 Technical Skills Award: Sara Joske, Rosie Jorgensen, Emily Norton-Knight, Jessica Saunders, Heidi Schmidt, Ella Wenzel.
          • Year 9 Most Improved Student: Milla Seaton
          • Year 9 Most Resilient Student: Sasa Cao, Ava O’Connor
          • Winner of the Lisa Brown Challenge: Addison Barrett

          Middle School Prizegiving Nights

All Middle School families should have received a notification from FIDO last week explaining the ticketing arrangements for our end-of-year events.

          IMPORTANT:
Given that we allocate seats to all the students in the year level so that they get to be part of the proceedings, we would really appreciate you sticking to the ticketing limit (two tickets per student). We already have several examples of families claiming more than two, thus increasing the likelihood of families missing out on seats unless we intervene.

          • Year 7 Celebration Evening: Thursday 24 October (Week 4):
Limit of two tickets per student; box office is now open and families able to book HERE.
            • Venue: Nairn Theatre

            The Chairman’s Dinner

Last Thursday evening, the Chairman of School Council, Mr John Fradgley hosted a superb dinner for the 14-year students and their parents, who began their journey at All Saints in Pre Prep.

The Chairman addressed the Year 12 students who have attended All Saints for all of their schooling and presented them with a certificate and personalised gift.

The Headmaster acknowledged each student, with a heartfelt and often with a humorous tale, as they were presented with their gift.

Priscilla Musolino and Jake Thistlethwaite spoke beautifully on behalf of the students about each of the past 14 years, and we enjoyed a wonderful media presentation depicting the students’ changing lives.

            Musical Showcase

The 2024 Musical Showcase was again a spectacular evening.

The students’ commitment to music and their amazing ability was evident on Thursday night. From the captivating final performance of Skyfall with over 100 students on stage in perfect synch, to the fabulous ensembles, the mesmerising solos, pitch perfect Choirs, through to the Big Bands jazz spectacular, it was an amazing demonstration of talent.

The whole All Saints community certainly share in the admiration and sense of pride that our Performing Arts department brings to the School. I would like to congratulate and thank the musicians, the technical crew, staff and our Director of Performing Arts, Mr Owen Clarke, on a superb evening of entertainment. It again showcased the vast pool of student and staff talent at All Saints. It is such a strength of our School to have the musical opportunities and expertise that the staff offer to our talented students.

            Senior Student Short Courses

At the end of last term and continuing into this term, we offered several short courses for students interested in gaining practical qualifications in Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA), Swim Teaching and First Aid.

The RSA and Swim Teacher courses provided students with essential skills and knowledge to enhance their employment opportunities, particularly for casual roles. Meanwhile, the First Aid course was attended by Year 12 students preparing for careers in health, as well as those who simply wanted to be equipped with crucial first aid skills for everyday situations.

These courses not only provide valuable certifications but also help students build confidence in real-world scenarios.

            Innov8 Pitching Evening

On Friday 11 October, Year 10 Business finalists competed at the annual Innov8 pitching showcase.

Hosted by the outgoing 2024 Business Leaders, in conjunction with the newly appointed 2025 Business Ambassadors, the event signified the culmination of the Year 10 Shark Tank eSchool Program, a dynamic platform for students to showcase their entrepreneurial skills and develop their business acumen.

This year the eight finalist teams were judged on their innovative business ideas by a panel of highly esteemed industry professionals who so graciously gave up their Friday night to support our students. The panel of ‘sharks’ included The Chairman of School Council, Mr John Fradgley OAM, Mrs Angela Barany, a Cordon Bleu Chef and owner of Joy&Joy Catering, and Mr Andy Gourley, the Founder and Director of Red Frogs Australia.

The level of innovation and creativity displayed by students was outstanding with this year’s winning team, Aion Solutions, comprised of students Yutik Huang, Saxon Millar, Archie Mourad and Nathan Xiao wowing the panel with their premium biofertilizer. Their unique product promises to reduce Australia’s carbon footprint by minimising waste and harnessing sustainable technologies while maximising profit.

Chantelle Archer, Lincoln Minahan, Jessica Sutcliffe and Sophia Whittle from Woofi took out the second-place prize with their business, a non-for profit organisation that provides pet therapy to those looking to improve their mental health by matching up Woofers with Woofis.

Last but certainly not least, India Millar-East, Angelina Morgan and Noelle Trainor took out the People’s Choice award with their business, New Beginnings, aiming to provide the less fortunate with a helping hand to make a fresh start.

It is clear from the impressive calibre of teams competing not only at Innov8, but pitching their ideas throughout the year in Year 10 Business, that the entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well within the All Saints community.

On that note, I would like to also thank Business teachers, Mr Reuben Kremer and Mrs MJ Ellis for the immense role they played in ensured the night was a success.

            Alliance Française Poetry Success

Senior French students worked diligently to prepare and present a classic French poem, and four of five finalists were from All Saints. Eisteddfod-like, they presented in front of French judges at the finals in Brisbane last week. Their performances in class were spine-tinglingly good.

            Congratulations on the following results:

            • 2nd place: Georgia Normile (Year 12)
            • 3rd place: Erin Kim (Year 10)
            • 4th place: Yvette Challen (Year 12)

"Be devoted to one another in love. Honour one another above yourselves."
            (Romans 12:10)

This beautiful Bible verse emphasises the importance of love and respect in our relationships. Last week, provided some lovely moments for select Year 11 Health Students and Senior Honours Music Students to devote time in service to others.

Year 11 Health Students visited St John’s Crisis Centre to serve lunch and to learn more about the types of services supporting those in crisis on the Gold Coast. Whilst at the centre last Thursday, the students showed beautiful leadership qualities by assisting a mother with her two young children. Providing companionship to the children not only helped their mother focus on securing housing and other necessities but also visibly brought joy and comfort during a challenging time. The staff and visitors to the centre commented how wonderful it was to see young people making such a positive impact in their community.

Last Friday, Senior Honours music students gave their time and talents to perform for residents at Earle Haven Retirement Village. It’s always heartwarming to attend these events where students are willing to share their talents with the community, especially with the elderly. Music intrinsically brings so much joy and comfort.

Under the support and guidance of music teacher, Mr Nigel Bardsley the students were happy to also share lively conversation, post-performance. We all travelled back to school on a natural high from this wonderful experience of what turned out to be a fun-filled afternoon.

The Performing Arts department are proud each year to present a concert where students use their talents to help raise funds for charities through Giveathon.

Last Thursday 10 October the twenty-first such concert was held in the wonderful acoustic of our All Saints Chapel. The audience were treated to an hour of professional-calibre repertoire by Vivaldi Bach, Handel, Haydn, Elgar and Vaughan Williams.

The concert was presented beautifully All Saints Camerata, guest soloists and staff. What a Showcase!

Musical Showcase, with over 300 Year 7 to 12 students performing on stage in strings, bands and choirs whether solo or combined in our grand finale, was a brilliant evening. Congratulations to all; thank you to Music teachers and Performing Arts staff, to ensemble conductors and Nairn Theatre techs, to AV and photo assistance, front of house admin, and back stage management! You all contributed to make this final ever concert for our Years 12s, and the experience for all our Seniors and Middle school students, a memorable and spectacular one. There was so much fun and excitement—people were dancing in the wings and aisles, a thrilling Mario Kart battle took over the band room, and so much more!

Highlights… everyone will have their own, but the All Saints Voices were brilliant, All Saints Camerata played Elgar amazingly, the drum line rocked it, Middle school bands were excellent, Choirs sang beautifully and with conviction, Jazz bands were cool (especially the double drum kits!), our Senior strings were great, Senior band played with real class to open the concert, and our small ensembles of clarinet, sax, flute and guitar were stylish and well prepared. Skyfall at the end was momentous (well done Carmi, Keeley, Maddy and Talita) as was the combined Adiemus. Our soloists excelled – well done D’Arcy Taylor (voice), Joy Lin (clarinet) and James Shin (flute), and our sneak preview of Newsies with Jack and Hugh showing what a thrilling musical this will be next year.

Here is a snippet of an email I received form a student last night, which says it all!

“I'd just like to say how great Showcase was tonight! I was chatting to different parents afterwards and they collectively agreed that this was the best Showcase they've attended. They were particularly impressed with the calibre of the Middle School ensembles. It was an energetic, entertaining, and fervent night and everyone displayed their talents beautifully. I think you can be very proud of how the music department has prospered this year and you can be excited for the years to come as everyone matures in their musicianship, talents and continue growing their love for music.”

For the first time, All Saints participated in, and hosted, Music Fest - a one day event where choirs, string or bands can perform in a non-competitive environment, and receive immediate and targeted feedback and guidance from the professional educator.

We entered the Year 5/6 Choir, Melba Girls Chorus and the Grainger Wind Ensemble (Middle School), and our Year 6 Copland Band.

All students performed very well and also showed great support for other schools as audience members. This year, participants included students from St Hilda’s and Dalby State High School

The adjudicators gave excellent feedback and awarded two golds, two slivers and a bronze to our ensembles.

            Parents & Friends

            Join the P&F in 2025

The All Saints Parents & Friends (P&F) Association is an integral part of the All Saints community. The philosophy of the Association is that funds are raised only after friends are raised and that without the building of a community spirit and the establishment of friendships, little else can be achieved.

At the P&F Annual General Meeting (AGM) each year, a committee is elected to oversee the association’s activities, supported by various sub-committees that help organise community and fundraising events.

If you are interested in joining the P&F Committee for 2025, please fill out the nomination below. All parents are welcome to nominate. Please note that committee members are expected to attend monthly meetings during term time and volunteer at P&F events throughout the year.

The 2024 P&F AGM will be held on Monday 4 November at 7.00pm in the McIntosh Administration Centre. All parents are welcome to attend the AGM regardless if they are nominating for a position or not.
