Leading for Others

At our Year 12 Commissioning service, Head of Senior School, Mr Bryn Evans, offered a thoughtful homily on servant leadership. In the Gospel reading, James and John approach Jesus and ask to sit at his right and left in glory. It is a bold request for recognition and prominence.

Jesus’ response is immediate and direct.

“You do not know what you are asking.”

He speaks first of the cost of leadership, of the cup he must drink and the path that lies ahead. When the other disciples react with frustration, Jesus gathers them and reframes greatness entirely:

“Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant… for the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve.”

The disciples are asking for position. Jesus redirects them toward service.

As I read the Gospel and then listened to Bryn speak about the kind of leaders we aim to be at All Saints, I was already thinking about two significant priorities unfolding in parallel at our school.

The first is the way my Executive team and I are structuring the working parties to carry forward our Blueprint 2026+ priorities. The second is how we bring to life one of our stated 2026 priorities under the Good Humans Ready for the World pillar: Strengthening student voice, agency and leadership.

These priorities are closely aligned.

As my team and I shape adult leadership structures for our strategic work, I have been reading Team of Teams: New Rules of Engagement for a Complex World by General Stanley McChrystal and his colleagues. The book explores how traditional hierarchies struggle in complex environments and argues that organisations must become flexible, trust-based networks built on shared understanding and distributed responsibility.

Leadership in that model is not about command and control. It is about clarity of purpose, shared ownership and deep trust.

The Gospel reading calls us to the same place.

If we are serious about strengthening student voice and agency, then leadership opportunities for our young people must be built around contribution, responsibility and service, not simply visibility.

Research in Positive Youth Development, particularly the longitudinal work of Richard Lerner and colleagues, identifies five core elements that shape healthy leadership capacity in adolescents:

  • Competence
  • Confidence
  • Connection
  • Character
  • Caring

When these are nurtured well, they lead to a sixth outcome: Contribution.

That final word is decisive. Leadership is not about accumulating influence. It is about contributing for the good of others.

Youth–adult partnership research by scholars such as David Zeldin, Brian Christens and Joanna Powers reinforces this. Young people develop leadership capacity when they are given authentic responsibility within supportive relationships. When students are trusted with real voice and real influence, leadership becomes something they practise rather than something they merely hold.

This research has directly shaped how we have re-designed our student leadership model for 2026 and beyond.

From Year 6 through to Year 12, we are establishing larger, collaborative leadership teams that operate alongside and strengthen our School Captains and formal Year 12 leadership roles. The aim is to widen meaningful participation, deepen shared responsibility and create more structured opportunities for students to serve within teams.

Our Captains have already begun presenting this new model to staff and students. Families will hear more about this in due course.

We do not want servant leadership to remain merely a Gospel teaching. We want it embedded by design in how we structure student leadership at All Saints.

It is also visible in the long and faithful service of several members of our community who will soon move into retirement.

Our much-loved Director of Sport, Fergus Leslie, has decided it is time to “hang up the boots” after 31 years at All Saints. Fergus will be with us until mid-May, and we look forward to celebrating his extraordinary impact later in the semester. Three decades of commitment to young people leaves a lasting mark.

Stacey Ward
, Assistant Head of Senior School - Wellbeing, will retire following her long service leave at the end of this term after more than 19 years of service. Stacey has walked alongside countless students during pivotal years of adolescence, modelling steadiness, care and quiet strength.

Mother Ann McGuinness
, now in her 13th year of service at All Saints, will continue her wonderful work with us throughout this year ahead of her planned retirement later in the year. Her spiritual leadership and care of our community members has shaped the heart of this school in ways that cannot be measured.

Each of these leaders has demonstrated what it means to lead for others. Their influence has not been about prominence, but about contribution.

As we carry forward Blueprint 2026+ and continue strengthening student voice and agency as a 2026 priority, the focus remains clear.

Leadership is not about leading for ourselves. It is about leading for others.

Have a wonderful weekend, All Saints Community!

The Spirit of Us, In Motion

It has been a real joy to see the campus come alive over recent weeks as our sport, performing arts and activities programs commence. I have had the privilege of playing with the Malcolm Arnold Wind Ensemble, seeing APS sport get underway, witnessing the launch of the Duke of Edinburgh program, celebrating our APS Swim Team achieving first place in the Junior Carnival and second in the Senior Carnival, and attending the stunning Year 12 Commissioning Service. Earlier this week, I also joined my Junior School colleagues for the launch of their professional learning journey centred on Teaching Sprints. In short, life at All Saints is well and truly alive!

At All Saints, the education we provide our young people is intentionally shaped both within and beyond the classroom. Our mission is to “empower every learner to discover who they are and explore what is possible with curiosity, courage and connection.” In this spirit, our students are encouraged to engage in a wide range of service, creative and physical pursuits. As David Epstein notes in his book Range, young people benefit from “gaining a breadth of experiences, sampling widely, taking detours, experimenting relentlessly, juggling many interests — in other words, by developing range.”

Such involvement is central to a truly holistic education. It allows each child to discover and develop their passions, talents and strengths, and to find their place and their people. We know that a strong sense of belonging is a vital contributor to a young person’s wellbeing.

These experiences also build adaptive skills through shared endeavour and encourage a generous, expansive life — one lived in connection with others: families, the school and the wider community.

As a component of this, the value of Sport participation and its role in an All Saints education was articulated earlier this week by our Director of Sport and Activities, Mr Leslie, and our Junior School Sport Coordinator, Ms Liussi in their message to the community. If you haven’t yet had the chance to read their FIDO message, I commend it to you when you get a moment over the weekend. We also celebrate the launch of the second iteration of our Athlete Development Program, coordinated by our Head of Physical Education, Mr Hutchison.

Thank you to everyone who has made me feel so very welcome at All Saints and I look forward to meeting more of our parent community at the various events throughout the year.

Are You Reading with Your Kids?

At the beginning of the school year, we turn our attention to reading for pleasure and all the benefits that come with reading. Sadly, many teens are turning away from reading for a variety of reasons; screens, lack of time or opportunity (at home and in the classroom), lack of reading role models, academic and peer pressures. This is a national trend concerning educators and parents alike.

Research has shown that reading for pleasure by teens:

  • improves well-being and reduces stress
  • improves concentration and memory
  • helps strengthen writing skills
  • expands vocabulary
  • enhances general knowledge
  • improves academic performance
  • nurtures use of imagination and creativity
  • teaches EMPATHY 👽👾👺👹😈🌏

What can you do at home to encourage your child to read for pleasure?

It’s simple. Ask your child what they are reading.

Just starting this conversation will lead to meaningful connections and a positive impact on your child’s reading habits. Picture Books for older readers, Graphic Novels, Manga, magazines, and audio books all contribute to the proven benefits of reading. Do not criticise their reading choices. Even if what they are reading is not what you would choose, it is all leading to positive gains.

Better still, embrace your reading child by reading with your child. If you model a reading habit, it will encourage them to follow your lead.

For book recommendations to kick start or nurture a reading habit, please direct your child to the library at any time.

We always enjoy a book chat.

Settling into a Strong and Vibrant Start to the Year

As we move into Week 4 of the school year, it’s wonderful to feel how settled and positive the Junior School has become. The start of the year has certainly been busy, with swimming carnivals, school photos, Book Tasting, Indigenous Games and all the usual activity that comes with a new school year - along with the added chaos of a sudden flooding event and early pick‑up!

Thank you to our families for your calm, understanding and support during this time. We are incredibly proud of our students, who continue to arrive each day with big smiles, ready to learn, and wearing their uniforms with pride.

The Power of Shared Family Mealtimes

      ❤️ Importance of Family Time
In the busyness of everyday life, it’s easy to overlook the simple act of sharing a meal together as a family. Yet research consistently shows that this ordinary routine can have an extraordinary impact on family connections and children’s development.

      👨‍👩‍👧 Fostering Relationships
The dinner table is more than a place to eat; it’s a space for conversation, connection and belonging. Children who regularly share meals with their families are more likely to build strong relationships with parents, siblings and peers.

      🗣️ Building Communication Skills
Mealtimes provide a natural opportunity for children to practise communicating - sharing their day, expressing ideas and learning to listen to others. These moments help develop skills that support collaboration and positive relationships.

      ✨ The Little (Big) Things
Many of our fondest childhood memories are formed around shared meals - laughter, stories and simple togetherness. These small moments often become the memories that stay with us longest.

      ⏰ Time to Connect
We know every family’s schedule looks different. Between work, school and activities, dinner isn’t always around the table - sometimes it’s a quick meal on the way home. That’s okay. I simply encourage families to prioritise shared mealtimes when they can, knowing the connection they build is worth it.

      Falling in Love with Reading

On Thursday 12 February, our Year 1 students enjoyed a special experience with their Year 5 buddies, designed to help them truly fall in love with reading. During their Library lesson, the Year 5 students carefully selected and gift‑wrapped a picture book, creating a delightful surprise for their Year 1 partner. Together, they unwrapped the book and shared the joy of reading aloud.

To thank their older buddies, the Year 1 students presented a handmade bookmark and a heart‑shaped chocolate, making the experience even more meaningful. This beautiful activity perfectly complemented Year 1’s current theme, Books, Books, Books!, while fostering connections, kindness, and a shared love of literature.

      Junior Swimming Carnival

The stage was set for a fantastic day of competition and camaraderie as our four House teams made their way across the oval to the indoor pool. Cheers, friendly rivalry and strong House spirit filled the grounds as eager competitors arrived at the pool and continued throughout the day. Dozens of personal bests were recorded, and every student is to be congratulated for their determination, courage and commitment to giving their best.

After a thrilling All Age Relay the final points were tallied and Lyndon House was crowned Champions for 2026.

Congratulations to all swimmers for giving their all for their House. From our seasoned competitors to our more cautious first‑timers, the House spirit was unmistakable, and it was heart‑warming to see such genuine encouragement shared throughout the carnival.

A special congratulations to our 2026 House Captains, who led their Houses with pride, enthusiasm and outstanding sportsmanship, inspiring those around them to do their very best.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to making this year’s carnival such a success.

      Junior APS Swimming Carnival

A huge congratulations to our APS Swim Team who performed so brilliantly at the recent APS Swim Carnival, securing a win for the third year in a row. We are incredibly proud of this outstanding result, but even prouder of the way our students worked together as an amazing team. Every student contributed, supporting and encouraging one another throughout the day. Their resilience, determination, and belief in each other ultimately led to a narrow but well‑deserved victory against many talented swimmers from other APS schools.

Congratulations to our newly appointed Swimming Captains, Krue O and Harper B, who, along with our Vice Swimming Captains Zoe P, Baxter S, and Finn K, led the team with outstanding leadership, encouragement, and commitment. They were exemplary role models throughout the carnival and played a vital role in fostering the positive team culture that underpinned this success.

      Indigenous Games

Our Year 4 students recently enjoyed a wonderful Indigenous Games afternoon, taking part in a range of traditional activities that celebrated teamwork, culture, and respect. Despite the very hot conditions, the students demonstrated impressive resilience, enthusiasm, and outstanding sportsmanship throughout the event. It was a meaningful opportunity for the students to learn about and experience games originating from First Nations pastimes, deepening their understanding and appreciation of the rich cultural heritage of our Kombumerri Country.

      Prep Family Day

What a heart-warming afternoon we shared at our recent Prep Family Day! We were absolutely thrilled to welcome families into our Prep classrooms to celebrate the wonderful start our youngest learners have made to their school journey.

The highlight of the day was watching our Prep students confidently stand together to perform a selection of songs for their parents and special family members. In just three short weeks, they have grown in courage, independence and enthusiasm. Seeing their smiling faces as they sang so proudly was a beautiful reminder of how much they are already thriving.

Following the performance, families joined their children for a special classroom activity. Together, they worked on drawing pictures of their families, sharing stories, laughter and creativity. It was such a joy to see children eagerly explaining their artwork and demonstrating the skills they have been developing in class. These moments of connection between home and school are so important and truly enrich our learning community.

We are incredibly proud of how far our little ones have come in such a short time. They are settling into routines, forming friendships, and embracing new learning experiences with confidence and curiosity.

Thank you to all the parents, grandparents and family members who joined us and helped make the day so special. Your support means so much to our students and to us. We look forward to many more opportunities to celebrate our Prep learners throughout the year!

      Celebrating Birthdays at School

At All Saints, we love finding special ways to celebrate the milestones that matter to our students, and birthdays are certainly one of them. Each Friday, any students who have celebrated a birthday during the week are invited to visit Mrs Pearson’s Ice‑Creamery for a birthday ice‑cream.

This simple tradition has become a much‑loved highlight of the week. It offers a joyful moment to pause, acknowledge each child, and celebrate their special day. These moments remind us that school is not only about learning, but also about connection, care, and creating happy memories that children carry with them, and who doesn’t love ice‑cream!

          Mum/Dad to the Rescue!

To start the year, we are mindful that students new to Middle Earth, particularly our 7s, can be a little overwhelmed by the organisational demands of our busy calendar and so our staff give grace, and constantly reinforce the advice to (1) write reminders in their diary and (2) read FIDO News every day. Even so, many students forget to bring their sport uniform … or leave their device at home … or forget their ingredients for Home Economics … and immediately come to Middle School reception to call home … and ask their family to 'come to the rescue'.

Now, the phone call might conveniently reach you when it’s NOT bucketing down with rain, or you just happen to be out and about and can easily drop by … but more often than not, the request results in a significant impost on your day.

What is the worst thing that can happen if they don’t have their equipment? Answer: a Middle School detention – which will require them to give up 30 minutes of a lunchtime to write a reflection on how they might be better organised in future. Thus, I would argue that you are denying them a valuable learning experience by swooping in to save the day. The school has a bank of reserve devices for students to borrow if needs be, so they won’t be denied access to learning materials … so please do resist their (ofttimes) impassioned demands to rescue them from eternal embarrassment!

          Todd Harm
          Head of Middle School

          Middle School Swimming Carnival

Congratulations to all members of the Middle School for their spirited involvement in last Tuesday’s Swimming Carnival. The opening march past kicked the whole event off in exactly the right spirit, with some hilarious themes in evidence. It was “Beautiful Burling’s” rendition of the iconic One Direction song, ‘That’s What Makes You Beautiful’, that became the earworm/meme of the day, though – earning the dark green house the Spirit Award.

Several parents and past students involved in the ASAS Swimming Club managed the canteen for this event – thank you all so much for your efforts – and every single Middle School staff member was on deck to officiate, motivate and spectate.

          FIDO
will give you a comprehensive rundown of all the results and photos, but of course we should single out Burchill House for winning the competition!

          Important: Friday Finishing Time

Please note that finishing time on a Friday afternoon is something of moveable feast.

Typically, the school day ends at 3.00pm on a Friday (e.g. Swim Trials, Home APS games); however, once the APS season commences, traffic conditions will often mean that students travelling away will return sometime between 3.10pm and 3.30pm.

With regards to supervision of Middle School students at such times, it is the same routine as any other day: if a student is not being picked up immediately after school, they are to head to the library (which remains open until 5.00pm on Fridays).

If you have any questions about the above arrangements, please contact MS Reception.

          The Year 12 Commissioning

On Tuesday evening we officially commissioned the Class of 2026 to take on the mantle of leadership for the year. During the evening, the Year 12 students were asked whether they were “ready and willing to accept the responsibility placed in you by the School Authorities and to carry out your duties with dignity and respect, showing loyalty and support to your fellow students, the Principal and the staff.”

The students replied, “We will, with God’s help, value the gifts we receive here at All Saints and use them to enrich this School for the benefit of ourselves and others and for the honour and glory of God.”

It is quite a commitment which should not be undertaken lightly. The Class of 2026 will receive many gifts at All Saints – friendship, learning, a sense of belonging, fun, opportunity, love and support, all of which, when properly valued, will indeed enrich our community. The year will fly past, it always does, but this Year 12 cohort has made a brilliant start to the year, so I hope they achieve the success they deserve.

          Inter-House Swimming Carnival

One of my favourite days of the year is the Inter-House Swimming Carnival. The Senior School students continue to show an outstanding sense of spirit and determination. It is truly one of our points of difference. Our students show up, cheer loudly, support their team and swim with enthusiasm. And because of this, they also have a great time. Those in attendance certainly typified the All Saints spirit, with costumes, war cries and teamwork the order of the day. The thrill of intense competition was perfectly balanced by the great sense of fun and encouragement that invariably accompanies these superbly organised events.

All results and photos are on FIDO, including final scores and photos of our winning Houses and Age Champions. My sincere congratulations to every student who gave their best effort on the day, whether making a splash; cheering the swimmers; supporting their House; or ably helping behind the scenes. Finally, a huge thank you to the staff, Heads of House, House Leaders, Mr Michael Mathews, Ms Emma Steele and of course our Director of Sport, Mr Fergus Leslie, for all the hard work leading up to, and on, the day.

          Constructing Success!

We are very proud to recognise that Darcy B (Year 11) has received the Construction Trade Award in recognition of her outstanding performance and commitment to her studies at Gold Coast Trades College, upon completing her Certificate I in Construction.

The Certificate I in Construction is a nationally accredited pre-trade qualification that allows students to get a taste of the construction industry. It provides students a hands-on introduction to the construction industry, helping them build practical skills and knowledge. We are very proud of Darcys efforts and hard work to achieve this award.

          APS Swimming

Congratulations to our APS Swim Team and coaching staff on a magnificent performance at the APS Swimming Championships at Somerset pool on Wednesday. The team spirit on display was outstanding. Mr Fergus Leslie and his team could not speak more highly of the commitment and efforts of our team. Every staff member I spoke to at the pool sang the praises of all our swimmers. A second place was a wonderful achievement behind a strong Emmanuel College team. The attendance at lead up sessions was strong and the Swimming Captains, Chiara C and Isaac B lead the team brilliantly and were outstanding role models throughout the preparation and the day.

A Creative and Inspiring Start to the Year in the Senior Art Department

The Senior Art Department has burst into the year with energy, creativity and enthusiasm. Year 10 Visual Art students have embraced experimental making and enjoyed a Brisbane excursion to the Museum of Brisbane and GOMA.

          Beth's student reflection:
“It was truly a wonderful experience. There is nothing quite like experiencing art firsthand, may that be through the hands-on experience in Olafur Eliasson’s Presence or the confronting scale of Archie Moore’s Kith and Kin. Eliasson creates audience engagement by having the viewer contribute to the artwork, such as the collaborative nature of the Cubic Structural Evolution Project where you are invited to construct your own creation from white Lego. The meaning and impact of Archie Moore’s artwork Kith and Kin is enhanced through its sheer scale, highlighting the enormity of the issue and the deep connection with the land. The influence and meaning of both these artworks are only done justice through seeing them in person, making the trip so rewarding and impactful.”

Year 11 Visual Arts in Practice students
have begun creating handmade wares for the School Fair and were inspired by a demonstration from alumna Amber P, while Year 12 VAP students are constructing sculptural works informed by last term’s workshop. In Visual Art, Year 11 students are exploring clay and surface design, and Year 12 students have commenced their IA2 resolved works.

          View the photos here.

Visual Art Captains Sarah E and Oliver H are launching an Easter‑inspired Community Art Workshop, rounding out a vibrant and inspiring start to the year across the department.

          Religious and Cultural Festivals Abound

This week holds a variety of cultural and religious festivals that are deeply meaningful to members of our All Saints community. We extend our warmest wishes to all who are celebrating or observing:

          • Lunar New Year – Welcoming the Year of the Fire Horse, a time of joy, hope, and renewal for many in our Asian communities.
          • Ramadan (Islam) – A sacred month of fasting, reflection, and increased acts of charity.
          • Maha Shivaratri (Hindu) – A festival honouring Lord Shiva with devotion and spiritual focus.
          • Rosh Chodesh Adar (Jewish) – Marking the birth of the new moon, a time traditionally associated with growing joy.
          • Lent (Christian) – A 40‑day season of reflection, simplicity, and generosity towards others.

May each of these observances bring meaning, peace, and blessing to all who mark them within our All Saints family.

As a Christian school, we marked the beginning of Lent with an Ash Wednesday service in the Chapel. Throughout the week, our students have been learning more about the meaning behind this season, and all were given the opportunity to receive the imposition of ashes. These ashes, made from the burnt Palm Crosses handed out in many churches last Good Friday, symbolise putting the past behind us and looking forward to the transformation God invites us into.

The word Lent comes from an old English term meaning spring — a time when new things take root and begin to grow. It is a season that encourages reflection, renewal, and small acts that help shape us into kinder, more compassionate people.

Many of our students chose to participate, especially in the Junior School, where they embraced the challenge of doing something good for someone else each day for the forty days leading up to Easter.

Bless you, each one, wherever you find meaning in your life.

For those who hold the Lenten season dear, may this season be a time of growth, hope, and gentle transformation as you make a good Lent.

          A Meaningful Beginning to Lent

This week, our Junior School marked Ash Wednesday, an important day in the Anglican calendar that begins the season of Lent.

Students gathered in the Junior School courtyard as Mother Ann and our Lay Chaplain, Mrs Gustafson, invited those who wished to receive the imposition of ashes, gently marking the sign of the cross in ash.

It was heartening to see so many students choosing to participate. In the Anglican tradition, the ashes are a symbol of humility and renewal, inviting us into a season of reflection, gratitude and growth as we journey toward Easter.

Year 11 Students Strengthen Community Connections

Each week throughout 2026, All Saints Anglican School’s Year 11 students have continued a cherished and meaningful tradition: volunteering at Hillview Aged Care in Merrimac as part of their community service commitment.

This partnership, now a valued component of the school’s Service Learning program, offers students the chance to form genuine connections, broaden their worldview, and contribute positively to the lives of local seniors.

Guided by teachers Colleen O’Dea, Amani Sparks, Lee Murphy and Louise Thorpe who collaboratively accompany and mentor the students during each visit, the program exemplifies All Saints’ commitment to nurturing compassionate, community‑minded young people.

Only three from each round are selected to go to the finals which are held in term two, in a specials concert in the Nairn Theatre.

Parents and friends are welcome to attend these rounds, watching some or all of the performances in the Holloway Music Centre.

Twilight Concerts & Performing Arts Events

All students in Choirs, Strings and Bands are provided an opportunity to perform in our series of Twilight Concerts in semester one. Kicking off these special events are our Concert Bands, Wind Ensembles and Big Bands. With over 200 children performing on stage this makes for an exciting evening.

Our String Ensembles and Choirs (middle and senior) follow in the final week of the term.

Attendance is compulsory for students, and parents, friends, and family are strongly encouraged to watch these free concerts. Having you there really encourages and motivates children in their music learning and enables the students to have a large and vibrant audience to perform in front of.

Introducing our 2026 Athlete Development Program

The All Saints Athlete Development Program (ADP) is now up and running for 2026, with strong interest from students across Middle and Senior School.

At the heart of the program is ADP Core, our open-access Strength & Conditioning offering for all students in Years 8–12. Running daily before and after school in the All Saints gym, ADP Core focuses on building sound movement patterns, developing age-appropriate strength and establishing consistent training habits. There is no booking required, students can simply attend and train.

For Middle School students balancing external sporting commitments, ADP Flexi provides structured access during the school day. Places in this stream are offered via application.

The ADP is not an elite training pathway. It is a development program designed to support every student, whether their goal is representative sport, improved performance in APS competition or simply building lifelong strength and confidence.

Full details, timetables and application information are available on the ADP page on FIDO.

          Fair Update: Can You Help?

The momentum is building for our All Saints Fair on Saturday 25 July, and behind the scenes our Area Convenors are hard at work shaping what promises to be another fantastic community day.

At this stage, we are calling for Stall Convenors for five key areas:

          • Mexican Stall
          • Korean Stall
          • Hot Dog Stand
          • Temporary Tattoo Stall
          • Soup and Toasties Stall

If you enjoy organising, rallying a small team and bringing a stall to life, this is a wonderful way to get involved. You won’t be doing it alone. Our Fair committee will support you every step of the way!

If you’re interested in convening one of the stalls above, or would like to learn more about what’s involved, we would love to hear from you. Please contact Kathryn and David at fairconvenor@asas.qld.edu.au.

Looking ahead to next term, we will also be reaching out more broadly for volunteers, donations and other ways to support the Fair, so there will be plenty of opportunities for everyone to play a part.

The Fair is entirely powered by our community, and it’s always special to see families come together to create something memorable for our students.
