A Finale, A Foundation, A Celebration

I have been feeling, most unusually, a little flat this week. I don’t think I was alone. I am missing the colour, the energy, the incredible dancing, singing and music that transported me through four magical performances of Legally Blonde: The Musical. What a show it was! It was impossible to leave the Nairn Theatre without feeling one’s spirits lifted and it was such a delight to share the joy of that post-show exuberance with so many parents and friends. After 22 years at All Saints, I should not be as astonished as I am by the professionalism and virtuosity of our musicals, yet I sit in the audience completely spellbound and just shake my head in disbelief at what has been achieved when the curtain falls. My warmest thanks and congratulations to all involved in the production; your incredibly hard work was entirely vindicated by eight superb shows which delighted those of us fortunate enough to be present for a theatrical experience that we shall never forget.

Dampened spirits never seem to last long at All Saints and having just come from a moving Foundation Day assembly, I find my heart full to bursting once again. Last year we received an unforgettable address from the founding Headmaster of All Saints, Reverend Canon Len Nairn, during which he shared a correspondence he had received from a past student expressing his gratitude for the trust Len had placed in him some 20 years earlier. Sue Daly managed to track that student down! Craig Costello (a delightfully mischievous School Captain in 2004) is currently working in Redmond, USA, as the Principal Researcher on Number Theory and Cryptography for Microsoft, and to quote his introduction when he gavea TED talk (definitely worth listening to), "Craig uses Mathematics to secure the digital world, both against the threats that exist today and those that may exist in the future." We invited Craig to respond on video to some questions about his time at All Saints and we delighted as one in those responses. His lovely Mum, Marita, was present to see her son on screen, along with his equally lovely sister, Brit, whose two children attend All Saints. It proved to be such a pleasant wander down a lane that holds precious memories for so many of us. I thought it might be interesting to share Craig’s responses to the questions I asked.

A chat with Craig Costello (Class of 2004)

Craig, you had five critical years at All Saints. Did those years change you and if so, how?

Are there any moments that stand out from your years at All Saints?

What motivated you to contact Reverend Nairn after 20 years?

Do you have any funny stories from your time at All Saints?

If you could encapsulate your All Saints experience in three words, what would they be?

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY

Abraham Lincoln said, “All that I am, or hope to be, I owe to my angel Mother.”

Mums are amazing. It’s as simple as that. I hope all of our beautiful mums were thoroughly spoiled last Sunday.
Our Pre Prep students spent some very special time with their mums, grandmums and special friends in the lead up to Mother’s Day. What a beautiful time to spoil them with flowers, gifts, words and hugs.

YEAR 3
Year 3 investigated how shadows move in relation to the Earth's rotation this week as part of their explorations in science. The students soaked up some sunshine (hooray for cooler temperatures!) as they learned about the movement of the Earth, plotting it’s progress during the day.

TRIPLE C LETTERBOX – OUR STUDENTS' VOICES
That old adage 'it takes a village to raise a child' is certainly reflected in all we do at All Saints. Building positive, open, honest partnerships with parents as we walk this exciting part of our journey together is crucial if our vision of helping every student achieve their potential is to be realised. It’s also joyous to be able to share in the delights of young people experiencing life, learning and growing together. What a blessing.

In the Junior School office students have access to our Triple C Box. It is one way we try to encourage every student to have a voice, sharing comments, complaints and complements. At each assembly the contents of the box are shared and actioned as required with the help of our Year 6 leaders. Students know that we will follow up concerns that they raise and acknowledge those who are contributing positively to our Junior School community. We are happy for Triple C notes to be submitted anonymously and only ask that they are written respectfully and, where possible, with a solution-focused approach. They usually are and clearly demonstrate the community mindedness of our young people.

I continue to encourage parents to share their Triple Cs with me as well. Your voice is equally important in ensuring that our community remains the positive learning place that it is. This does not mean that the journey will be without bumps, twists or turns, but it does mean that we will navigate them safely and proactively together.

Year 6 Artist Workshop

Last week Year 6 Visual Art students were treated to a sculpture workshop by artist Carolyn V Watson.

Carolyn spoke to the students about her work and generously shared her sculptural construction techniques, giving them lots of skills and inspiration for their own sculptures to be completed in the coming weeks.

Carpark and Playground Reminders

Please have your family name signs visible in cars as you pick up in the afternoon.

It may seem like a small thing but it really helps us to have your children ready for you.

No sign means we have to stop your car, ask you to wind down your window and then call your name. A simple, clear sign (we have given every family a sample) displayed on the top of your windscreen means we can call your children to be ready at the pick-up zone ready for you. Please help with this!

PLAYGROUNDS BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL
Parents are reminded that our school playgrounds are not able to be used out of school hours. In the interests of safety, students should only be playing on the equipment under the supervision of a staff member at duty times throughout the school day.

Students attending OSHClub will sometimes be supervised on the playgrounds by OSHClub staff, but we ask that parents collecting students from OSHClub or after school sport activities not use the playgrounds. I know that 'no playing on the playground' seems like a silly rule, but our playgrounds do require active supervision.

#PROJECT RASE
Thank you to the parents that attended last week’s Parent Information Night regarding the relationships and sexuality education program undertaken in Middle Earth this term. Parents got to hear from Sheena Callaghan, one of the two external providers from True Relationships Australia who will lead two different lessons with each Core class across Years 7, 8 and 9 during Week 5 and 8 of this term.

If you still have any questions about the program, please don’t hesitate to contact me via the Middle School Office or email tharm@asas.qld.edu.au.

TINBALL
During Monday and Wednesday lunch times this term, we’ve held the first of three rounds of Inter-House Tinball, as well as the play-offs for places five through to eight. This hectic hybrid of ten-pin bowling and dodge ball involves the entire house on court at once – hence the need for students to wear house uniform on these days.

Next week will see Burchill and McIntosh battle it out for the championship, whilst Day and Rapp will play off for third and fourth place. We’ll publish the full table of results in the next edition of Saints Alive!

Year 7 Camp

From Monday 15 to Wednesday 17 May, the entire Year 7 cohort bussed up the hill to Mt Tamborine for their annual camp.

Torrential overnight rain (90mm!) on day one dampened the surroundings but not the spirits of the staff and students, and each house group approached the range of outdoor activities with gusto. From the high-adrenaline 'leap of faith' - where students donned harnesses to climb a tall gum tree before subsequently leaping off its platform - to the comparatively sedate variety of team-building games that required a more cerebral approach, the 7s supported each other, learned a lot about themselves and their peers, and made many new friends.

All in all, it was a wonderful experience with so many positive outcomes. A huge thank you to Year 7 Coordinator Mr Andrew Watkins for his organisation, and to the Year 7 teaching team and additional staff for their tireless efforts in supporting their charges through the exhausting program!

UQ SCIENCE AMBASSADORS
The University of Queensland (UQ) Science Ambassador Program was introduced in 2001 to ensure a high level of awareness of science activities among secondary students. The program continues to raise the profile of science in secondary schools across Queensland. At the end of last year, the Faculty of Science UQ recognised All Saints Anglican School with an award for our commitment to the program over the past 14 years. The award recognised the many Science Ambassadors and Ambassador Teachers who have made a significant contribution to the promotion of science within the school and community. My thanks to our Head of Science Mr Mark David-Tooze and to all of our brilliant science teachers for facilitating this program. Congratulations to the 2023 Science Ambassadors who will continue on this fine legacy, Year 11 students Adelaide Hooper, Joy Lin, James Shin, Angus Slater, Rosalyn Cheung, Catherine Kim, Amana Islam and Allegra Jaffar, who received their badges at assembly on Wednesday.

MODEL UNITED NATIONS
Over two days last week, Senior School students Alexander Galt, Georgia Normile, Sam Butterworth, Ava Sekac, Scarlett Thorpe, Crista Hayes and Abigail McKowen participated in the Bond University High School Model United Nations (BUHMUN) competition; a mock sitting of the United Nations.

A Model UN is a simulated learning exercise where students adopt the role of a representative for a specific country. All Saints students were tasked with representing the interests of their assigned country as the conference deliberated significant global issues.

The theme for this year’s BUHMUN was centred around UN Sustainable Development Goal 2: Zero Hunger. Teams discussed different global positions on achieving food security, improving nutrition and promoting sustainable agriculture, to name a few. Throughout the Model UN, students provided opening statements, deliberated with colleagues on potential solutions and ultimately came to a consensus on a resolution.

The All Saints team performed brilliantly and won the BUHMUN Secretary-General's Outstanding School Award and Alexander Galt (Year 11) received the individual Diplomacy Award. Congratulations to all of these students that performed so brilliantly in this competition and were such fine representatives of All Saints.

DIGITAL DETOX WEEK
This week, the members of the All Saints Student Wellbeing Committee have been hosting a Digital Detox week. Digital Detox week has encouraged all students to take some time to be mindful, away from a screen. My thanks to this fabulous group of students and their facilitator Ms Candice Ahu who have hosted a number of great activities through the week. Monday saw an instant polaroid station (taking a selfie like they did in the old days!), while Tuesday was making bracelets and some mindful beading and colouring. Wednesday was meditation, green tea and appreciation of being in the moment while Thursday saw the creation of a communal work of art on canvas. On Friday, students were encouraged to 'flush your feed', which involved taking five minutes to unfollow something or someone that doesn't bring you joy or positivity. Thank you again to this committee for continuing to work to bring positive habits into our young people’s lives and to all of the students who supported these activities throughout the week.

Foundation Day

FOUNDATION DAY
It was a joy to celebrate our 36th All Saints Foundation Day on Friday. It was a heartfelt trip down memory lane and a reminder of the values on which the School has grown. Last year, our Foundation Headmaster the Reverend Canon Len Nairn spoke passionately about truth, faith and compassion. On Friday, this was bookended beautifully by an interview with a student that Mr Nairn had spoken about, Class of 2004 School Captain Craig Costello. Craig spoke eloquently about the opportunities, values and the fond memories that he has carried from All Saints through his life. My heartfelt thanks go to all the students and staff who contributed to the success of the day including the 2023 School Captains and the Pegasus Award winners.

2023 FOUNDATION DAY AWARDS
A very special part of our All Saints Day assembly was the announcement of this year’s recipients of Foundation Day Awards. These awards are presented to two Senior School students in recognition of their acts of service and their willing contribution towards the wellbeing of others. Worthy recipients have “demonstrated a commitment to the support and strengthening of the foundations on which the School is built through a conscious effort to protect the integrity of All Saints and a heartfelt willingness to contribute to the ongoing vision and ethos of the School.” Congratulations to Tara Sabet and Zachary Stevenson (Year 12) who received the Foundation Day Awards for 2023. These two very worthy recipients were selected for the enthusiastic yet humble, gracious and dignified way they approach their learning, friendships and daily commitments.

Thats a Wrap on Legally Blonde!

JUST WOW!

What a whirlwind couple of weeks of stellar performances. So many of our school community supported the show and loved it. Thank you for that support and I hope you had a blast! This message below was sent to all those involved in the musical and we thought we’d share it with you too.

As the Delta Nu windows slammed shut for the final time on Saturday night, like us, you may have felt like there was a Legally Blonde sized hole in your heart on Sunday morning. I also wonder if, like us, your cheeks are still sore from smiling and your heart is still brimming from six months, 47 rehearsals and eight joy-filled shows of fun, nerves, elation and the very best kind of exhaustion.

To the staff - Omigod you rock!

What a phenomenal team! A musical such as this is a labour of love and your dedication to these young people sees no limit. To all those who played a part far beyond your 'real' jobs, thank you so much for taking on this enormous amount of work (in the pit, front of house, behind the scenes) and making this event one that will shimmer in the hearts of our community forever. Your expertise, creativity, mentorship of our students and friendship are Harvard-worthy. I am so grateful to have worked alongside you.

To the parents and volunteers - Snaps!

Thank you so much for wholeheartedly joining us on this wild, fun and excessively pink journey. You are an incredible community that humbly and selflessly sits (literally and metaphorically) backstage; cheering, packing, washing, cajoling, driving, waiting, laughing, safety pinning, curling, ironing, Cricutting, feeding, painting, serving, waiting again (do they ever finish rehearsal on time?) and washing some more!

An Elle Woods What-You-Want-style hat tip to you all!

Thank you for your passion, your verve, your desire to be the best you could be. We are so grateful for your friendship, your good humour and the legacy you now leave behind. For us, yours is a legacy of heart (so much love!); of stepping up, of being grateful, of holding yourselves to the highest of standards and performing the most perfect closing night show we can remember.

YEARS 3 AND 5 INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC PROGRAM GRADUATION CONCERTS
In Week 8, students in Years 3 and 5 will showcase their learning at the instrumental music program graduation concerts, which are both open for attendance by families, friends and teachers. See the date claimer below for concert times. The program next term moves to phase two, where students (and families) opt in to continue learning an instrument and participate in the Year 3 String Orchestra and the Year 5 Superband. I cannot recommend strongly enough the beautiful experience of being part of an ensemble. This experience, in combination with specialised and supportive private tuition, is the mainstay of our music program here at All Saints. Many who saw Legally Blonde: The Musical were impressed by the orchestra which included 12 student musicians; some of whom started their instrumental learning in our Year 3 String and Year 5 Band Programs!

UPCOMING PERFORMING ARTS DATES

  • Band Twilight Concert – Thursday 25 May
  • String Twilight Concert – Tuesday 30 May
  • Junior Choral Twilight – Thursday 8 June (there is no Middle and Senior Choral Twilight Concert this term)
  • Year 3 Strings Program Graduation Concert – Wednesday 7 June
  • Year 5 Band Program Graduation Concert – Friday 9 June
  • Middle School TheatreFest – Monday 5 June
  • Ensembles Evening – Monday 12 June

DRAMA AND COMMUNICATION
Congratulations to the students who have sat and passed AMEB, Trinity or ASCA exams. We are proud of your efforts and though we cannot list all, we would like to acknowledge one outstanding achievement.

Sienna Eddie (Year 8) was recently named one of the top performers in Queensland for her Grade 4 AMEB Speech and Drama exam. This award will be presented at Parliament House in the next couple of weeks. Congratulations Sienna.

Celtic Service

Coming home to the hearth of God’s heart was the theme of our annual Celtic service held in the Chapel on Wednesday night. A warm fire blazed in the ancient hearth, bedecked with artefacts gleaned from homes and our stash of theatre props.

The Altar Table was bedecked with pottery crockery ready for the Celebration, the sound of the Baptismal Font water trickling in anticipation of what was about to unfold. A magnificent tree flourishing with leaves donated by the All Saints shrubbery and created by the lovely Mrs Sue Daly graced the sanctuary with the reminder of God’s grace in the whole of creation.

Fourteen baptisms blessed the cool evening, the accompanying aroma of baking bread offering the promise of the sacred meal to follow. Echoes of ancient Celtic music (The Water is Wide) entwined with the comforting lyrics of Psalm 23 and the contemporary wistfulness of Oceans held the words of the liturgy gently in harmony as Honor Nicholson (Year 12), Gia Pearl Lowry and Rebecca Hodgson (Year 9), accompanied by the wonderful Mrs Gaynor Morgan, lifted our hearts and souls with their beautiful voices giving expression to the Love which only God can bestow.

Sheer delight as the voices of all who gathered lifted praise to the Christ, our host for the evening. From the babe in arms to the adults who offered themselves humbly in baptism, the children of God united in celebration, along with those who came to witness their joy.

With the splash of holy water, the anointing of oil, the giving of the light of Christ in the form of a candle, each candidate was honoured, blessed In the Living Water and welcomed into the Holy Family of God.

All the while, freshly baked bread rose to the occasion in time to grace the Eucharistic table with ceremonial symbolism, as it was offered in gratitude, blessed, broken and shared to nourish the family of God.

What joy to have the Table surrounded by happy, curious children eager to partake of the sumptuous fare on offer by our host, Christ Jesus.

The entire service was a reminder that none of this happens without the participation of the whole family. Including those mentioned above, deep gratitude must be expressed to those who do the paperwork to set it in motion; to the practical set-up and rehearsal. Thank you Mrs Adrienne Bennett, Mr Faron Anderson and the creative work of Mr Matt Dean. Maddy Cooke (Year 11) saw to the technical aspects of the evening and the culinary expertise of Ms Louise Thorpe, Mrs Bernadette Callaghan and Mrs Jenny Stevens graced not only the Eucharistic Table with delicious creations, but also the Arborium tables during the soup and bread service afterwards.

Colleagues came together to assist in the liturgy and it is always a joy to work alongside them - thank you Revd Stewart Perry from Anglican Church Robina, Mr Patrick Wallas and Mrs Renee Applewaite. Finally, a special thanks to Mrs Louise Thorpe whose administrative skills, along with so many others, helped make this truly a night to remember.

In an increasingly busy world, it is heart-warming to know that so many are still finding the time to stop for a moment and consider their own spiritual health, and that of their children. To those who were baptised, and to those who came along to support them, thank you. The call to support one another in our spiritual quest is the call to love. God bless you for taking this to heart.

Salvos Breakfast

It has become an annual tradition for the Year 12 Saints Outreach Service committee to attend the Red Shield Appeal breakfast held at the Crowne Plaza in Surfers Paradise.

This year Chairman Mr John Fradgley, Headmaster Mr Patrick Wallas, Service Learning Coordinator Mrs Louise Thorpe and I accompanied this delightful group of students to the event. Ruby McDougall, Ganga Li, Mae Rosewarne and Honor Nicholson represented All Saints with dignity and pride as we listened to advocates of the tireless work of the Salvation Army in a landscape beset by increased homelessness and need.

Hearing the personal accounts of people who find themselves in need of support is always a reminder that none of us are excluded from the possibility. The great work of the Salvation Army compels us to think beyond ourselves to the plight and dignity of others.

Our students returned to school with a deeper understanding of the reality that the precarious nature of day-to-day life for some, right here on the doorstep of All Saints, is something we need to notice, because we can both learn from their resilience and offer some assistance along the way.

This is shared with humble gratitude and with a prayer for those who face these colder nights without adequate shelter and food.

Blessings,

Mother Ann McGuinness
