Whole School

Being Present

As we wrap up a rich and rewarding Term 2, I want to extend my sincere thanks for the energy, support, and wholehearted spirit that continues to define our community. From camps and trips, to the vibrant performances of the Newsies musical, to outstanding efforts across APS sport and the excitement of our athletics carnivals, it has been a term of togetherness and excellence. Our classrooms, too, have been alive with learning — from exams and oral presentations to those quiet lightbulb moments that signal real growth. Term 2 is often a time of consolidation, and I hope every student finishes the term having experienced success in some form — and with a sense of pride and confidence heading into the break.

As I shared with staff this morning, while these major events shape our memories, it is the small, everyday moments — a kind gesture, a quiet encouragement, a thoughtful check-in — that shape our culture. These unseen interactions are what truly make All Saints the community it is, and I remain deeply grateful to lead a school so invested in children, in connection, and in community.

I would also like to acknowledge the dedication and passion of all our teachers and staff. Whether nurturing learning directly or supporting it in countless unseen ways, your work sits at the heart of our school.

I would also like to thank you — our parents and carers — for your continued support and partnership. Whether cheering from the sidelines, helping with homework, attending events, or simply being present in your child’s life, your involvement makes an enormous difference. We are fortunate to have such an engaged and invested parent community.

Thank you to all who completed the recent parent survey. I will receive the full results in the coming weeks and will communicate a date early next term to share key findings and how they will help shape our school’s future direction. Your feedback is invaluable and deeply appreciated.

One of the more refreshing ideas I came across this week was featured in The Atlantic. The article, titled “The Dumbest Phone Is Parenting Genius” , describes a growing trend among parents: the quiet return of the landline — not just as a nostalgic throwback, but as an intentional alternative to smartphones and a way to help children learn to be more present in conversation.

That article sparked a conversation in my own home. My wife and I found ourselves reminiscing about our childhoods with a couple of fellow parents — those long, often aimless chats tethered to a phone cord stretched down the hallway. No scrolling, no filters, no notifications. Just a voice, and the space to listen.

The article captured it perfectly: many parents are rediscovering that the simple act of talking — really talking — builds empathy, patience, and attentiveness. And while I am not suggesting we all reinstall wall-mounted phones (though we are seriously considering!), I do think there is something to be said for the idea behind it.

Maybe these holidays, we can all find a little space to be more like a landline.

Try a tech-free day. Create a space in the house for unplugged chats — face-to-face conversations without phones, screens, or distractions, where everyone is fully present. Make a family call to a grandparent — just to talk. Or encourage our older children to have an unhurried conversation without the need to multitask. Not as a rule. Just as a reset.

Whatever your break looks like, I hope it includes time to rest, reset, and reconnect with the people who matter most. Wishing you a wonderful, present, and joy-filled holiday.

Warm regards,

Matt Corbett

📖 Learning, learning, learning

And much, much more. Definitely fun for the whole family. Our students are so fortunate to be able to experience such breadth and depth of learning opportunities. This is the priceless and unique All Saints gift. And it works perfectly when home and school walk together in unison. Teachers, parents and students working together towards a common goal ensure that the incredibly hard work that takes place every day in our beautiful school enables our students to continually become stronger, braver and ever more successful in their pursuits.

Thank you to our staff for their hard work and commitment to our kids this term and to parents who support and encourage all that happens at school. It really does take a village – and this is one awesome village.

Throughout this semester we have seen innumerable numbers of students stepping up, stepping out and stepping way beyond their comfort zones to achieve personal bests. Whether passions, talents or purpose lie on the sporting field, in the art studio, upon a stage or in the classroom they have been encouraged and challenged. And the results have been fantastic.

We have watched our young people be brave, resilient and determined in the face of adversity, and then humble, graceful and proud in celebration of achieving personal bests. Theirs and those of others. These are the qualities and strengths of character we strive to help flourish.

I encourage every family to sit and share the achievements recognised in the end of Semester Reports and Portfolio’s (PP-2) which will be sent home this week. Take a few minutes to celebrate successes, to reflect upon how they were achieved and to consider learning goals for next term.

I wish every family a safe and restful holiday and look forward to welcoming everyone back to Term 3.

Prep Nursery Rhyme Parade

This annual event rocked our Week 7 calendar and our Prep students wowed a very enthusiastic audience with their colourful costumes and articulate Nursery Rhymes.

This Prep tradition is one that is cemented into the hearts and memories of students, and parents, as they progress through the school. It is often reflected upon by our Senior Students as they prepare to leave the All Saints nest and recognised as a favourite Junior School memory.

The Surfing Scientist Makes Waves in Year 2

This term, our Year 2 students have been diving into the world of mixtures in Science, perfectly paired with their reading of George’s Marvellous Medicine by Roald Dahl. To bring their learning to life, we were thrilled to welcome a very special guest—renowned scientist, author, and TV presenter Ruben Meerman, also known as The Surfing Scientist.

Ruben wowed students and staff alike with a series of dynamic science experiments and demonstrations, all centered around the fascinating topic of mixtures. His infectious energy and passion for science left a lasting impression on everyone.

We’re excited to announce that Ruben will be returning in September as a special guest presenter at our Junior School Livewire event. We can’t wait to see what scientific surprises he has in store next!

Term 2 Wrap-Up: Thanks, Travels, and Transitions

As an eventful and enjoyable Term 2 draws to a close, we head for what I hope will be a restful break for all.

I sincerely thank all our students for their efforts in creating what I consider to be a very productive and enjoyable term at All Saints. I wish all staff and students on the two tours departing these holidays, Performing Arts (Europe) and Ski Trip (Perisher), safe travels and the best of weather. Best wishes also to students and staff on the Silver Duke of Edinburgh expedition through Mapleton National Park. It may be school holidays, but All Saint’s doesn’t stop providing amazing experiences. To the staff taking these tours, and likewise to all of our amazing teachers, a huge thank you for their dedication and wonderful effort in making the term so successful.

Finally, a thank you to all the parents who have worked with us to provide partnerships and hence opportunities for our Senior School students.

      TERM 3 STAFF NEWS

I am taking long service leave for Term 3. I will miss you all, but thankfully there is an amazing team of teachers and leaders who will step into my role, and other roles next term. I have complete confidence that the Senior School will run like clockwork, and I will return in Term 4 to see the success of the year continued, particularly for the Class of 2025.

      • Mrs Stacey Ward will be the Acting Head of Senior School for Term 3.
      • Mr Craig Pascoe will be the Acting Director of Pastoral Care
      • Mrs Nyree Hill will take on the role of Acting Head of Reeves House.

We already work as such a close team that these people will fit seamlessly into these positions and continue to support the students, staff and school community in the typical exemplary manner.

      • Mr Fergus Leslie is taking long service leave for Term 3. We wish Mr Leslie a restful and enjoyable break.
      • Mr Leslie will be replaced in the Director of Sport (Years 7 to 12) role by Mr Ian Hutchison. Mr Hutchison has worked closely with Mr Leslie on our sporting programs this year and will fit seamlessly into this role.
      • Ms Lizzie Wood will be taking on the position of Head of Department - Physical Education.

All Saints is blessed to have experienced and talented teachers to cover these roles without interruption to the students.

Year 10 Subject Selection Information (For Year 11 2026)

All Year 10 students were involved in a highly informative Careers Day on Thursday. Hopefully, this will assist students in choosing their pathways through Senior School and beyond.

The Subject Selection Evening in Week 2 of next term will begin the formal subject selection process. It is Tuesday 22 July at 6.00pm in the Nairn Theatre.

There will be presentations from a number of staff and subject coordinators will be available to give advice and answer questions. All families should keep this evening free in their diary. Subject selections will then be due in week four of Term 3.

      Year 11 Road Safety

Young people continue to be overrepresented in road deaths and serious injuries. On Thursday, the Year 11 cohort attended the RYDA Road Safety Education workshop at All Saints.

RYDA provides young people with the skills and strategies they need to stay safe on the roads. The RYDA workshop featured highly engaging practical demonstrations, real-life narratives, videos, quizzes and interactive role play. The RYDA approach supports youth development in a number of areas including social resilience and anticipating and managing risk. RYDA gives students a unique opportunity to set road safety goals and build strategies alongside the friends they will most likely be riding with, as drivers or passengers. At the workshop, students attended six interactive sessions that have hopefully provided them with greater skills and tools to limit risk on the road.

      Inter-House Athletics Carnival

The annual Inter-House Athletics Carnival was held on Monday and Tuesday.

As always, it was an absolutely sensational event. I must congratulate the students for their outstanding efforts across the two days. Finally, we were treated to two perfect days of athletics weather. It was great to see students supporting their House and building the teamwork and House spirit that makes our School so great.

A big thank you as well to all the staff who ran the events across the two days in their typical great spirit. It could not be such a success without the expert organisation of Mr Fergus Leslie and Mr Michael Mathews.

A huge thank you to these two committed staff members.

      Titration Competition

It was my privilege recently to take 12 All Saints students to Griffith University Gold Coast Campus for a titration competition hosted by the Gold Coast branch of the RACI on Saturday June 7.

For the non-chemists out there, titration is a quantitative analytical chemistry technique that is used to determine the concentration of an unknown solution.

It is a team event that takes accuracy and precision, and this is developed through weeks of practice in the lead up to the competition. An added bonus of this activity is the opportunity for students to extend and refine their skills in chemistry, and work together as a team.

All Saints students achieved some excellent results, both as individuals and as teams.

1st Place: Saho Hiroe, Maaya Tsuchida, and Audrey Wong.
      3rd Place:
Beverly Chen, Willow Harris, and Erin Kim.

Charlotte Werder was awarded High Distinction, and CJ Burrows was awarded Credit.

My thanks to all students who participated; they were wonderful representatives of All Saints and were a pleasure to coach in the art of titration. We are also very grateful to our science laboratory staff, Mrs Glenda Harvey, and Mr Riley Bird, who organised all of our equipment and chemicals for practices and for the competition.

      Amber Peck's Entrepreneurial Journey

I am thrilled to share the inspiring story of one of our talented Year 12 Visual Arts in Practice students, Amber Peck, who last Sunday held her first market stall at Broadbeach Arts and Crafts market. This remarkable achievement is a testament to her dedication, creativity, and the skills she has honed through her studies at All Saints.

      From Classroom to Market Stall

Amber’s journey began in Year 11 when she embarked on a ceramics project as part of her Visual Arts in Practice course. Through this project, she discovered a passion for working with clay and after hours and hours of dedication and honing her skills she developed a range of ceramic wares.

At the market, Amber showcased a variety of beautifully crafted ceramic pieces, including bowls, candles, mugs and decorative items. I can testify that her stall attracted a lot of attention, and she received numerous compliments on the quality and beauty of her work. This experience not only boosted her confidence but also provided valuable insights into running a small business and engaging with customers.

      Skills for the Future

Amber’s success exemplifies the skills highlighted in Mr Corbett’s address in last week’s Saints Alive referencing The Future of Jobs Report 2025 by the World Economic Forum which highlighted several key skills that will be in high demand for our students:

      • Creative Thinking: Amber’s entrepreneurial ideas for her stall and her innovative ceramic designs are a perfect example of this skill in action.
      • Resilience, Flexibility, and Agility: Setting up a market stall and interacting with customers requires adaptability and resilience. Amber showed great flexibility in managing her stall and responding to customer feedback.
      • Technological Literacy: Amber leveraged social media to promote her stall and attract visitors.
      • Motivation and Self-Awareness: The drive to pursue her passion and the self-awareness to recognise her strengths and areas for improvement were key factors in her success.
      • Curiosity and Lifelong Learning: Amber’s journey from learning ceramics in the ceramic studio to applying her skills in a real-world setting exemplifies the importance of continuous learning and curiosity.
      • Leadership and Social Influence: By taking the initiative to set up a market stall, Amber demonstrated entrepreneurial leadership and the ability to influence and inspire others through her work.

At All Saints, we are committed to nurturing these essential skills in our students. The Visual Arts in Practice course’s intention is to provide opportunities for hands-on learning and real-world application.

We congratulate Amber on her outstanding achievement

and look forward to seeing her continue to grow and succeed in her artistic endeavours.

      Worldskills National Championship Success

The Worldskills National Championships were held in Brisbane last week. 605 competitors vied to earn gold, silver and bronze awards in their skill area. Competitions were held across 63 separate skill areas including carpentry, landscape gardening, floristry and hospitality.

Year 11 student, Bella Gaddes, competed in the VETiS Food & Beverage Competition. This category was specific for school student competitors. Bella was successful at the regional competition last year and this led to the opportunity to compete in the national championships this year.

Throughout her preparation Bella was mentored by a previous Worldskills competitor and judge, now the Head Mixologist at W Hotel, Brisbane. Bella trained for four hours every Tuesday night to refine her skills in preparation for the competition.

Bella’s competition was over three days. Each day Bella competed over a 4-5 hour period. The first day for a breakfast service, the next day a lunch service which included Bella creating and making a Queensland themed mocktail, the Tropical Glow, and on the final day a dinner service. The Tropical Glow mocktail consisted of pineapple juice and ginger with a dash of apple cider vinegar, topped with a coconut and pineapple foam – if you ever have a chance to taste this mocktail in Heavens Above, do it! It was delicious! The standard at the competition was very high. Bella was required to prepare the restaurant for the service and to provide food and beverage service during a service.

We are thrilled to announce that Bella received the Silver Award in the Food and Beverage category. Bella competed against competitors from around Australia, and this is an exceptional achievement. Bella displayed professionalism, attention to detail, excellent customer service and a thorough understanding of the standards required when working in food and beverage and service.

Congratulations Bella, we are very proud of you!

Gathered in Grace: The Blessing of Community

As Term 2 draws to a close, we pause to give thanks – for the learning, the laughter, the challenges met, the quiet moments of grace that have carried us through (I write this in my office, resplendent in my pink fluffy blanket hoodie - thank God for Pyjama Day!) and reflecting on the joy of our All Saints community. Community is a particular blessing in this place, and is worthy of celebration.

The term has been rich with growth and connection. From the classrooms where learning escalates throughout the term, the playgrounds and sports carnivals, in offices and staffrooms where companionable chatter abounds over the flow of administrative work, we have seen the culture and spirit of our school community flourish. We give thanks for every teacher (of every nuanced variety), every student and every member of our fabulous staff who has contributed to the shared rhythm of our days.

This is also the mid-year break for our tireless International House staff who must be commended for their work, both during the day and after school as they attend to our International boarding houses and the family they forge with the students in their care.

With a couple of sleeps to our winter break, our heartfelt blessings reach out to those who will enjoy a less scheduled time of rest and renewal. May your days be gentle, your sleep deep, and your hearts restored.

We also offer our special gratitude to those who will remain on campus during the holidays – our dedicated administration, cleaning and grounds staff and our after School-care specialists. Your quiet service sustains the life of our school, and we are deeply tankful for your presence and care.

How exciting, that we celebrate the completion of our long-awaited carpark! It will, at least, be ready for use at the beginning of next term and should ease the flow of our morning and afternoon traffic – another blessing indeed!

As we part ways for the next three weeks, may we carry with us this spirit of community, which has gathered us in grace this term. Whether resting or working, near or far, we remain one school – held together by shared purpose, mutual care, and the quiet strength of belonging.

May your travels be blessed, may those who need it find gentle healing, may those who stay home find joy in familiar faces and places, and may you all be blessed with gracious favour.

      Grace and peace,

      Ann McGuinness
      School Chaplain

Hearts in Action: All Saints’ Students Serve with Purpose

At All Saints Anglican School, service is at the heart of who we are. Over the past few weeks, students across several year levels have continued to embraced opportunities, giving back to the community in an array of meaningful ways.

Year 12 students have brought music, games and conversation to Hillview Aged Care, brightening the day for residents with their talent and warmth. Meanwhile, the Middle School Britten Girls Choir delivered a joyful performance at Earle Haven Retirement Village, lifting spirits with every note.

Only last week, Year 12 and Year 6 Leaders joined forces at the DNK Netball/GT Rugby Cup events to support the Junior School’s 2025 GIVEATHON Charity—The Stroke Foundation, raising both awareness and funds.

Acknowledge and gratitude go to our Year 10 students who have continued their commitment to volunteer at St John’s Crisis Centre, serving lunch while behind the scenes, Middle School students have been busily preparing sandwiches and food bags for Rosies – Friends on the Street. The focus at both St John’s and Rosies’ is not only about nourishment of food, but the provision of care and dignity to those in need. At All Saints Anglican School, we are proud and honoured to be able to support their life-changing work.

These acts of service reflect the All Saints’ spirit—where compassion, leadership, and community come together to make a difference.

IMPACT Youth Summit 2025: A Celebration of Youth, Resilience & Possibility

This year’s 2025 Gold Coast Youth Summit came alive with energy and purpose. On 6-7 June, hundreds of young people aged 15 to 24, joined together for a two-day experience like no other. Held in a vibrant, TEDx-style format, the event featured inspirational speakers, hands-on workshops, immersive programs, and live entertainment—all designed to empower the next generation of changemakers.

Year 11 All Saints Anglican School students, Oliver Hunter and Flynn McWaters truly enjoyed the experience. Here is what Oliver had to say:

Hi Mrs Thorpe and Mother Ann,

I thought I would share a photo of last week's Youth Summit at Sea World. Flynn and I attended Friday 6th - Saturday 7th as representatives of St John's Crisis Centre.

Both of us found it very inspiring not only because of the inspirational speakers but because of all the other attendees like us - who came from all different backgrounds, families, and social and family situations.

Flynn and I both found it eye opening to see just how fortunate and lucky we were to be able to attend as well as having an education at a school like All Saints.

It was amazing see kids as young as 8, who are homeless and overcoming/transforming their lives with the help of others.

      Thanks again,

      • Prize Donations: Contribute raffle or presentation prizes to gain exposure for your business, even if you're not entering a team.

For all event and sponsorship enquiries, please contact the P&F Golf Day coordinator, David Pearson at pandfgolf@asas.qld.edu.au

All funds raised go directly to the All Saints P&F to support projects that benefit all students across the school. We’d love to see you there!
