Whole School

Welcome Back to the 2025 School Year!

To all our returning families, it is wonderful to have you back. To those joining us for the first time, welcome to the All Saints community—I have no doubt you will soon feel the warmth and connection that makes this place so special just as I have during my first few weeks.

I hope the summer break provided an opportunity for some quality time with family and loved ones. However, I also know that not every holiday period is easy, and if your family has faced challenges, please know that we are here to support you and your child in any way we can.

It is an honour to be writing my first newsletter as the third Principal in our school's history. I began in early January, spending time with our incredible Commercial Team, who were hard at work turning on the 'All Saints Engine' —ensuring that everything was ready for the return of our educators and students. A special shoutout to our Facilities and Maintenance team, whose commitment to our school is evident in the way our campus looks and feels.

Honouring the Past, Embracing the Future

In my first address to staff, I spoke not only about my educational and leadership ethos but also about the shoulders we all stand on as custodians of this remarkable school. The day before that address, I had the privilege of sitting on Reverend Len Nairn’s balcony, soaking in stories of our past. I was reminded of his entrepreneurial spirit and the bold vision that laid the foundations of All Saints.

I also remain incredibly grateful for the strong culture Mr Patrick Wallas has handed down—a culture built on community and care. With these roots in mind, I reminded our staff that the next chapter of our school must stay true to these defining attributes while ensuring our students graduate with unique points of difference—built around character, ingenuity, and an ability to navigate an ever-evolving world.

A Remarkable Start to the Year

The first few weeks have already brought many highlights:

  • Year 12 Leadership Camp, where I had the privilege of joining a beautiful Eucharist around the firepit and engaging in a fireside chat with our young leaders. I shared insights into my life and values, and we spoke about the importance of expecting and embracing obstacles, as they are the very experiences that shape our character.
  • Hosting 500 delegates for the Sharing Best Practice conference—an incredible demonstration of our commitment to professional learning.
  • Parent information evenings, where the strength of our home-school partnership was evident
  • Watching our exceptional educators and support staff at work, seeing their passion and expertise firsthand.
  • Spending as much time as possible visiting classrooms and chatting with students of all ages.

Why All Saints?

People have asked me, 'Why All Saints?'

All Saints struck a chord with me very early on. You will often go to a school website and see glossy photos and read inspiring quotes—words designed to attract new families, which is absolutely fine. But with All Saints, it was different. Our school knows who it is.

As I read our website and the Saints Alive newsletters for the first time, I thought, this is a school that is humble, confident in its identity, genuinely living its values and utterly focused on ensuring that every student has a chance to succeed and feel a sense of belonging. I was hooked from that moment.

When I met the staff, the students, my predecessor Mr Wallas, and finally attended my family’s welcome assembly, it confirmed everything I had already felt—All Saints is a school that celebrates every student, in every pursuit, and for everything they bring to our community.

The Character of Our Young People

What has stood out most in these first few weeks is the exceptional character of our young people. This is a school where students communicate with confidence, show authenticity, ask great questions, and bring their full selves to their learning and relationships. It is clear that this is the result of a powerful partnership between home and school—one that nurtures curiosity, courage and a deep sense of belonging.

As our School Song so beautifully reminds us: "Truth, Faith, and Compassion will withstand any foe."

These words are not just a motto—they are a promise. A promise that no matter the challenges ahead, we will face them together. A promise that All Saints will continue to be a place of wisdom, kindness, and unwavering strength. A promise that the next chapter of our school will be one written by all of us, in unity, faith and hope.

Let’s Connect

I would love the opportunity to meet more of our families over the coming weeks. Please look out for a couple of Principal Coffee Mornings this term, where I’ll share a little about myself, my thoughts on education, and an insight into our journey ahead.

And, of course, please do say hello when you see me around campus. The All Saints connection extends far beyond our school gates, and I have already enjoyed speaking to families in and around town.

Here’s to a wonderful year ahead!

Matt Corbett
Principal

Principal's Commissioning

I write this late on Friday afternoon, reflecting on what has been a truly joyous day as I was humbly commissioned as the third Principal of our great school.

The photos capture the spirit of the occasion far better than my words ever could.

I want to extend my deepest thanks to everyone who contributed to the organisation of this special event—one that our community will hold onto for years to come. As I shared with our school today, this is a moment for all of us—to reaffirm the spirit, values, and shared purpose of All Saints and to commit ourselves to its next chapter.

The weight of this responsibility is not lost on me, nor is the essence and beauty of our school and community. I will work tirelessly for your children, always keeping their best interests at heart. It is a privilege to serve this wonderful community, and I am excited for all that lies ahead as we continue to grow, learn, and lead together.

    Junior School

    Bring on 2025

A very warm welcome to this new school year.

Like all areas of the All Saints landscape, the Junior School is a busy, bustling place where learning, growing, loose teeth, monkey bar crossings and world cup rehearsals on the main oval are the order of every day. It is a happy thriving place where every opportunity to learn is grasped with vigour and every student’s uniqueness, strength and contribution are nurtured. I spent time looking back upon 2024 during the holiday break with pride and a sense of All Saints joy. 2025 now lies ahead of us and, the Junior School staff and I look towards it with enthusiasm for the potential it promises.

A new year brings new and exciting opportunities for each of us. The possibilities of what we can achieve seem endless but can sometimes feel a little overwhelming. For our new and returning students, new class groups, new classrooms, new play areas and new teachers can feel a little daunting but with a slight perspective change, can provide the chance to forge new friendships, defeat learning challenges and achieve personal growth.

I ask each of our students to approach the start of this new year with 'a kind heart, an open mind and a brave spirit.'

Every kind action and word will affect another and be repaid over and over again. The same can be said of unkind actions and words. This year let’s choose kindness.

Keeping an open mind allows new thoughts, experiences and people in and remind us that things are not always as they seem.

In being brave of spirit, we accept that doing something is always better than doing nothing and recognise that mistakes are simply proof that we have tried. No one can ask more of us.

We begin this very busy term with a focus on filling the weeks ahead with learning, friendship and a determination to face every new challenge with courage, persistence and a growth mindset. I encourage every Junior School student to proudly be the person you are meant to be, accepting others for their differences but also accepting yourself and all that makes you, you. Dr Seuss wrote, 'Today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is you-er than you.' The important thing is to be the best you.

Warmest wishes for a happy, healthy, successful first term.

    Expectations

The All Saints Junior School is a unique, and very special learning environment but the outstanding nature of our teaching and learning culture does not come about by accident. Our expectations in regard to respect shown for self, others, learning and our community environment are high, consistent across year levels and curriculum subjects, and relevant to all members of our community.

Our School Vision reflects our commitment to Growing through Grace, Learning through Love. Maintaining a learning environment where learning is valued and celebrated, words and actions demonstrate respect for others, and where every learner is guided towards achieving their personal best, is central to transforming this vision into reality. When these stars align, school is an exciting and happy place to be.

The beginning of a new year is an opportune time for reflection about expectations of behaviour, uniform, homework and learning application. We will spend some time during the first few days reinforcing these expectations with students.

We may respectfully remind students about appropriate haircuts, ribbons, jewellery and sports shoes. I thank you, in advance, for supporting the high expectations we have imbued in our culture.

    Car Park Reminders

Unfortunately, our much anticipated new pick up and car park are well away from completion due to the wet Christmas we have experienced. This means we are continuing to implement the Junior School drop off and pick up procedures that we all became expert in late last year. We will continue to keep families updated on its progress throughout the term. To help ease congestion and ensure safety, traffic marshals will be on-site to direct vehicles.

The new year requires just a little extra patience for all at drop off and pick up times as new families learn to navigate these spaces and settle little ones into their routines. Please help us to keep these times safe and minimise frustration.

    A few important reminders:

    • Please be patient. We’ll be working hard to keep traffic moving while prioritising the safety of our young people.
    • Avoid arriving too early in the afternoon. Our school gates are closed until 3.00pm and we need priority access to the school and car parks for our Pre Prep families.
    • Don’t panic if you’re caught in a long queue. We will ensure students are cared for in safe, secure spaces until you arrive.
    • Consider Aspire’s Early Bird 4.00pm pick-up option. This allows children to have afternoon tea and play with friends while you avoid peak congestion. Book directly with Aspire OSHC. For more information, visit Outside School Hours Care.
    • Staff will be on hand each morning and afternoon to help children in and out of vehicles, minimising the need for parents to get out of cars. We’ll also assist with heavy bags. Please have everything ready for us to retrieve from back seats or boots to keep the drop-off line flowing.
    • Pre Prep students must be signed in and out by a parent each day. These families have priority parking in the undercover Junior School car park. We ask that only one parent enters the centre in the morning and that drop-off time is kept brief to help our youngest learners settle in.
    • Prep students will use the undercover Junior School car park for drop-off and pick-up. Staff will be on hand to help them walk upstairs and carry their bags as they adjust to their new routine. Please say a quick goodbye and encourage your child to walk up with us—this will help build their independence and establish positive morning habits.
    • Parking: Limited parking is available in the large car park behind the Senior HPE Centre, but parents using these spaces must walk with their children to and from the Junior School. Teachers are not on duty across the oval or in these car parks, and students are not permitted to walk to them alone.
    • Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we navigate the first week back. We appreciate your support in keeping drop-off and pick-up safe and efficient!

    Head of Junior School

    Week 2 Parent Information Evenings

We are looking forward to connecting with families at next week’s Parent information evenings. Each will begin at 6pm in your children’s classrooms where we hope to share some valuable information to help build success into every school day. Families will be invited to spend time with their child’s class teachers learning more about the routines, teaching and learning programs and expectations of each year level. Following this short information sharing session parents are invited to join us for a friend raising opportunity outside the Junior School Music Room. Light refreshments thanks to the All Saints P&F will be served.

Parents and teachers working together to support our children is the most powerful learning strategy we can implement. I hope to see you there.

    For your diaries:

Before School Duties and After School Activities

    BEFORE SCHOOL DUTIES
Staff supervised morning duties begin at 7.45am. Students arriving at school from 7.45am (if not involved in a pre-planned co-curricular or extra-curricular activity) will move to one of two duty spaces. Students arriving before 7.45am are required to sit on the seats outside the office.

    AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES
In addition to our enriching teaching and learning program and comprehensive array of co-curricular opportunities a range of extra-curricular activities are currently available for Junior School students. These activities run parallel to our classroom and co-curricular programs and, as many operate on a user pays basis, attract additional fees. Information, contact and registration details are now available on FIDO.

    Middle School

    And So It Begins …

A huge welcome back to one and all. I hope you are set for another action-packed year at All Saints!

No doubt the families of the 90 new students joining our school for the very first time have had a topsy-turvy week – full of stomach-churning butterflies, information overload and all manner of new routines to establish.

Please take comfort in the knowledge that every student in the Middle School is acclimatising to a brand-new classroom teacher, a brand-new year level precinct and a brand-new set of classmates with whom to share the journey in 2025 … and if the truth be known, every single teacher will have begun the year with their own degree of trepidation about making a good impression on all their new charges.

Here’s hoping this year is a happy and successful one for you and your family!

    Todd Harm
    Head of Middle School

After School Drop Off and Pick Up

No doubt most of you have already sampled the delights of the car park congestion that occurs at the start of each year before our co-curricular program kicks in? To minimise the problems associated with afternoon rush hour, can we re-emphasise the following:

    • The School Library is open until 6.00pm each day (5.00pm Fridays). Students can use this facility to read, complete homework or work on assessment pieces, thus decreasing the number of cars lined up at 3.15pm.
    • If you have students across two or three of the sub schools, please arrange for them to all gather in the one place for pick up. Parents that pick up Junior School children from the Junior School loop and then proceed along to the Middle School/Senior School traffic rank are a major cause of traffic congestion.
    • Under no circumstances should you arrange to pick up your children on Highfield Drive or any of the neighbouring cul de sacs.

We really do appreciate your patience and cooperation as we do our utmost to improve traffic flow through the School. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions, concerns or suggestions.

    Todd Harm
    Head of Middle School

    Parent Information Evenings

Over the first few weeks of this term, we are hosting our all-important Parent Information Evenings. Last Tuesday we had a healthy turn out for the Year 9 evening, and we really appreciate the support and positive feedback!

The remaining evenings are as follows:

    • Year 8: Week 2, Monday 3 February: 7.00-8.15pmish (no RSVP required); Venue: Nairn Theatre
    • Year 7: Week 3, Tuesday 11 February: 5.00-8.00pm (RSVP required); Venue: as per email sent home next week.

We ask that parents and caregivers move mountains to be able to attend these evenings as they are a time to disseminate key information regarding the program for the year AND an opportunity to establish a strong, working relationship with your child’s core teacher.

    Todd Harm
    Head of Middle School

    FIDO Parent Communication Pages

To streamline communication and decrease the number of emails sent home, we would very much encourage you to stay in touch with goings on by regularly reading the relevant year level Parent Communication Page on FIDO.

    • Year 7
    • Year 8
    • Year 9

If you have downloaded the School app to your phone you will receive a notification any time something important is posted.

    Laptops

By the end of Week 1, all Middle Earthlings will have most likely received their one-to-one device for the year. As per our Technology webpage, Year 7 students have received a brand-new Surface Pro, whilst Year 8s and 9s retain their Surface Book from last year. Some key points to note with regards to these devices:

    • Please encourage your Middler to ensure their device is placed on charge each evening.
    • Whilst the Surface Books have a customised hardcover shell to protect them, both the Book and Pro need to be carefully stored and transported. The All Saints backpack already has a customised, in-built sleeve to protect a device.

    Head of Middle School

    Early Departures

If a student needs to leave school during the day, parents/guardians should inform the school via Absences on the All Saints app.

The student should then present at Middle School Administration before leaving. If they subsequently return to school (for example, after an appointment), then the student should once again present at Middle School Administration to sign back in.

Parents may also wish to email their child’s Core teacher, as well as middlereception@asas.qld.edu.au.

    Todd Harm
    Head of Middle School

    Swimming Trials

The Middle School Swimming Carnival will be held on Wednesday 12 February in the indoor swimming pool.

By way of preparing for this, we will be conducting swimming trials on Friday 31 January and Friday 7 February.

Students should wear their House shirt, sport shorts and shoes on these days.

    Todd Harm
    Head of Middle School

    Uniform Requirements

Middle School students are permitted to wear House uniform on Mondays (APS Training) and Sports uniform on Fridays (APS Fixtures).

From Tuesday through Thursday, students must wear their Day uniform:

    • If they have HPE during the day, they are required to wear their Day uniform to and from school and change into their sports gear at the appropriate break times.
    • This applies even if HPE is scheduled for Period 1 (the first lesson of the day) or Period 7 (the last lesson).

    Senior School

Congratulations to our Class of 2024

I would like to congratulate the students and staff for the results achieved by last year’s graduating cohort. Their commitment to the senior program produced outstanding ATAR results; in fact the best we have ever received as a school.

Incredibly, three students received a perfect ATAR score of 99.95. There were only 36 awarded across the state from 562 schools, so to have three is an amazing testament to the ability and commitment of our students and the expertise of our teaching staff.

Twenty students achieved an ATAR above 99.00 and more than 50% of students received an ATAR above 90.00.

So many students have gone on to the University course of their preference. From Medicine, Biomedical Science, to Advanced Business, Science, Economics, Engineering and Music; a fine crop of All Saints students will be enhancing the workplaces of the future.

We also had another amazing cohort of brilliant young artists, designers and performers who have been accepted into prestigious courses with very selective intakes. All Saints students have secured pathways into apprenticeships, the Australian Defence Force, the hospitality industry and many other varied professions. Many of these are due to the School Based Traineeships and Certificate courses they completed while still at school. Amazingly, 62 students had already secured their University offer before they had finished school based on their qualifications and studies, guided by our Careers and VET team.

I believe that all of these results came about because of the character of a well-rounded group of happy and positive students who chose to support each other through their final year. Another brilliant effort from Ms Alison Weeks and Ms Julie Klein, and the dedicated staff and students.

    Year 12 Leaders’ Retreat

The 2025 Year 12 Leaders’ Retreat was a wonderful success, offering the 80 badged School Leaders a valuable preparation program over three days at Tyalgum Ridge Retreat.

It was an opportunity for staff to help channel the talents, good humour, brilliant ideas and energy of the new student leadership body. Despite the humidity, it was very worthwhile as the Year 12 leaders have been on fire this week. Through Year 10 orientation activities, Year 10 games afternoon and the Senior School assembly, they are setting an excellent tone and I thank them for their efforts.

Many thanks to Ms Stacey Ward, the Heads of House, Ms Cheryl Frawley, Mother Ann and Mr Brendan Callaghan for their organisation of the retreat. Also, thank you to the other staff mentors of the various student leadership teams for giving their time to visit the camp to work with their leaders to ensure that the students are off to a great start in 2025. We are lucky to have so many staff prepared to visit camp to work with the students as well as our new Principal, Mr Matt Corbett who was prepared to drive out to Tyalgum to share his open and honest reflections on leadership with the students around the campfire.

    Year 10 Transition Program

On Tuesday, Year 10 students were involved in a program designed to welcome them into the Senior School community.

The day featured a series of informative presentations on the Senior School’s structures, policies and support systems. Students also experienced a series of outdoor and team building challenges led by the Year 12 House Leaders and the Heads of House. Students were set up with their new Surface Book and hopefully left the day feeling more comfortable with the Senior School and their classmates.

The Year 10 cohort presented themselves well and approached the day with optimism and enthusiasm. It was a great start.

    Parent Information Evenings

Thank you to all Year 10 parents that attended the orientation evening on Wednesday night. Hundreds of sausages were consumed but more importantly, connections in the Senior School were made.

These presentations provide parents and students with invaluable details and guidance regarding the Academic and Pastoral programs, Careers and Pathways, and Excursions and Camps. They are designed to provide you with invaluable information to assist in Senior School success.

The Year 12 Information Evening is Wednesday 5 February and the Year 11 Information Evening is Wednesday 12 February. Both begin at 7pm in the Nairn Theatre.

    Change to Family Details/Family Circumstances

It is important that medical and family information and contact details held by the School are correct.

Work Experience Placements over the Holidays

While many of us were relaxing over the recent school holidays a number of our students took the opportunity to undertake work experience with a variety of local businesses. Work placements provide the opportunity for our students to learn more about careers they are considering and to have the chance to speak with people working in those fields. We are grateful to our alumni, school parents and local businesses for hosting our students and providing some great insights:

Ava O’Connor, Year 10 – Ava originally planned to complete a 5 day placement in childcare at Sunkids at Burleigh. Ava had such a great time, and the employer was so impressed by her, that Ava completed 12 days of placement! Ava aspires to be a teacher and this opportunity confirmed to her that this is her vocation. Ava is now keen to commence a school-based traineeship in early childhood education this year to further her knowledge.

Jack Lindsay, Year 12 – Jack is interested in an architectural career. DBI Design at Broadbeach is a great supporter of our school and once again hosted Jack for a week-long placement. DBI provides students with a formal program for the week to ensure that the student has the opportunity to engage with architectural practices. During Jack’s placement he designed a small tower, completed a floor plan and then created a rendered image of a building. The DBI Architects provided guidance and support to Jack through the completion of these activities.

Sophie Walters, Year 12 – Sophie’s career interests involve public relations and marketing. Juliet Bell (Class of 2013) at Prestige Cars Group/Porsche Centre Gold Coast, is always keen to provide our students with insights into this field. Sophie spent a week assisting Juliet and Isabella Galt, another ASAS alumni (Class of 2022) who works with Juliet to stage the launch the new Porsche Macan at HOTA. Incidentally, Isabella first met Juliet as a Year 12 student at our ASAS Careers Dinner and through that connection, also undertook a work placement which led to her gaining employment with Juliet!

Talia Sharpe, Year 12 – Talia is completing a Certificate III in Hospitality as one of her school subjects. Talia is a great hospitality worker and is keen to have her own café specialising in teas in the future. Talia is also interested to work with animals. The opportunity to work at Pooches and Pastries a business owned by school parent Kylie Van Haren was a perfect match for Talia. Pooches and Pastries is a café which services both people and dogs! Not only do they create great meals, there is a dog grooming business and they create tasty treats for dogs also! Talia impressed Kylie so much with her work ethic and hospitality skills that she was offered casual employment – well done Talia!

Verona Hilzinger, Year 12 – Past student, Melissa Ingliss (nee Coleman) (Class of 2006) hosted Verona in her business, Rose Litigation Lawyers. Verona is interested in a career in law. Melissa met Verona last year in our Careers Centre for a chat about her career and advice about working in the field of law. How Do You Make Holy Water

What a joy to be back at the school filled with happy voices! I love the buzz which begins around campus in the couple of weeks before the start of the school term. The smell of a pack of fresh new uniforms worn for the first time, the rest carried in arms over which a broad grin beams.

I came across a few such students and their parents, early birds in the school shop, and the children expressed their excitement at being back. (Which is always a good sign.)

'I have a question to ask you Mother Ann', said one beaming Junior School lad. 'How do you make Holy Water?' Not a question I’m often asked…

'I know how I make Holy Water', I replied. 'How would you make it?'

'I’d boil the hell out of it!' was the resounding reply!

I then received two requests for baptism from past students, one a school captain. Both are living happy, settled lives and enjoying this season of raising their own families, in the hope they will attend the school which gave them so much. These are the calls that bring joy in the knowledge that life beyond our blue gates is thriving in the wake of the education and experiences gained at All Saints.

Yesterday I received an email from another student – this time in Senior School. 'I think I found my faith over the holidays’ it read. 'It was a magical moment, and I would love to share it.' These are moments to warm any School Chaplain’s heart!

I love that Jesus uses the metaphor of water to describe life itself. (The ovals were filled with it at times over the holidays, to the delight of the ducks who came out to play.) ‘I am the Living Water’, said Jesus, and surely this is evident in the flowing of God’s gracious love energy throughout our community, even when unnoticed.

Talking of Living Water, Patrick called from the UK to wish us well just before school began. He says he is enjoying every moment of this new season of his life and cannot wait to see what every new day will bring. He wished us well and asked us all to pray for Matt Corbett and his family as they begin their new journey with us.

What a joy it has been to meet Matt, Helen, Charlotte, Arlo and Tui over the break. Matt’s easy manner and genuine, respectful curiosity has already endeared him to our students and staff alike. His leadership skills already evident in the workings of our great complex machine, and I sense that God has sent us a worthy and fierce leader who will take us to great places beyond our imaginings.

If the complexities of Holy Water, as described by my young teacher, and Living water coalesce, and any sense of ‘hell’ is being expelled, then surely we are embarking on a journey which will be both challenging and edifying, prevailing only in the belief that we are buoyed by the great love of God and light of Christ, who will lead us safely to shore.

    Blessings, to you all,

    Mother Ann McGuinness
